"Some day I had no idea what the scene even was": Kathryn Newton Lost Her Cool With Ant-Man 3 Director Payton Reed For One Particular Scene With Paul Rudd

Ant-Man 3 has been one of the most highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe movies of the year, and it’s not just because of the return of Paul Rudd as the witty superhero. Fans are also excited about the introduction of Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang, the daughter of Ant-Man.

However, filming a movie of this magnitude has challenges, as Newton recently revealed in an interview with BBC Radio 1. The actress shared her experience on set, including a particular scene that frustrated her.

In the interview, Newton described a green screen MODOK face about the same size as the one in the final movie, but it looked much bigger on set. As a result, she had to act with a piece of tape instead of the MODOK head.

“There was a green screen MODOK face about the same size, but it looks a lot bigger in the movie than what we had on set. And he was awesome. But the truth is that when I have to look at the camera, I can’t have the big Modoc head because he’s just too large. So I would usually act with a piece of tape. Like all those lines, everything, all of that running.”

She also admitted that some days she had no idea what was happening in the scene, explaining how they would tell her to run, but she didn’t know MODOK was chasing her. This confusion culminated in one particular scene, which appeared in the trailer, that she wasn’t happy with.

“Honestly, some days I had no idea what the scene even was. They were like, all right, you’re running. I didn’t know that I was being chased by Modoc. I had no idea what I was doing.

Newton revealed that she was supposed to say something in the scene, but they ADR’d a “dad” into the trailer that wasn’t in the final movie. She was frustrated because it made it seem like she was saying something she wasn’t, and she didn’t like how her mouth moved in the scene.

“There’s one part in the trailer that I got mad at Payton Reid for because I was like and they adrred a dad. I do not say dad in the movie. I don’t say dad, watch the movie, compare it to the trailer. That moment is not the same. I want you what’s? Presented in the trailer. They are lying. I don’t say dad there. I just take a weird breath and I can’t help it. My mouth makes weird shapes.”

Despite the challenges she faced on set, Newton was thrilled to play the role of Cassie Lang. She admitted that she didn’t know much about the character before she got the gig, but she recognized her from the Ant-Man movies. However, she had no idea how important Cassie was in the comic universe.

Newton shared how she loved the father-daughter storyline in the Ant-Man movies and how they were all about the heart of the family. She praised the introduction of a new little superhero in the form of Cassie Lang, who is still figuring out her powers.

She even acknowledged the significance of the younger generation of characters being introduced across the MCU, with the possibility of the Young Avengers appearing. Newton expressed her excitement at seeing kids dressed up as Cassie Lang and other characters at the movie premiere, hoping they would grow up with the characters and love them just as much as she does.

Suiting Up For The Part

One of the highlights of playing a superhero is undoubtedly donning the iconic costume, and Newton was no exception. However, she admitted that she had no idea she was getting a super suit when she first signed up for the role. She was surprised when she underwent a 3D body scan to create her suit.

The actress also revealed that her suit had a special feature that allowed her to grow. However, she found it challenging to move around in the suit and had to learn to move differently to make it work. Despite the difficulties, Newton expressed her love for the suit, even taking it home as a souvenir after filming.
