From being one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time to becoming one of the highest-paid actors in the industry, Dwayne Johnson is now one of the most marketable stars in Hollywood. However, despite his remarkable success, even The Rock has experienced a fair share of box office disappointments. But interestingly, even Johnson’s eight biggest bombs are 2.2 times better than James Gunn’s The Flash.
With the 2001 movie, The Mummy Returns, Johnson started his acting journey in Hollywood. While his projects like Moana, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Fast and Furious propelled him to stardom, there are some others that proved to be box-office disasters. However, while James Gunn’s The Flash garnered $268 million, it could not surpass The Rock’s 8 worst-performing movies.
1. Southland Tales
An infamous example of Dwyane Johnson’s box office misfires was the 2006 film Southland Tales. Sometimes known as the biggest flop in cinematic history, the movie registered a mere $374,743 box-office collection against its budget of $17 million. Reportedly, apart from bombing at the box office, the movie received harsh criticisms at Film Festivals and critics. The movie is available to stream on Apple TV and Prime Video.
2. Doom
In 2005. Johnson took up the challenge to bring the beloved video game franchise Doom to the silver screen. However, the movie received an unfavorable reception, generating $58.7 million in collection against a $70 million budget. Video game lovers can catch Doom on Netflix or rent/buy it on Amazon.
3. The Rundown
The next movie on the list stands as an anomaly. Having received fairly positive reviews with a stellar cast, the 2003 release The Rundown was only able to collect $80.9 million with a budget of $85 million. However, the possibility of a sequel seems like a ray of hope to revive the franchise. The film is available to watch on Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon (Rent/Buy).
4. Jungle Cruise
The 2021 Disney film Jungle Cruise made a daring attempt to replicate the famous Pirates of the Caribbean. With a humungous budget of $200 million, the movie barely reached its break-even by collecting $220.9 million. Reportedly, the collections were hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the studio’s decision to release it on its platform Disney+.
5. Walking Tall
The 2004 remake of the 1973 movie Walking Tall proved to be a huge disappointment. Even though the movie was part of an already well-established franchise, the movie, made with a $46 million budget could only amass $57.2 million. Walking Tall is available to stream on Prime Video and Paramount Plus.
6. Be Cool
With a budget of $75 million, the 2005 star-studded comedy Be Cool was a box-office bomb. Only able to bag $95.8 million in collections, the film received a poor reception, making it another disappointment in The Rock’s career. The movie is now streaming on Prime Video.
7. Gridiron Gang
The 2006 film Gridiron Gang showcased Johnson’s versatility as an actor. A departure from action comedies, the movie was a serious sports drama with The Rock in the lead. However, unfortunately, the film struggled at the box office earning a mere $41 million against a $30 million budget. Watch the movie on Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon.
8. Faster
Usually viewed as an early attempt to solidify Dwyane Johnson as an action star, the 2010 movie Faster received critical backlash. Moreover, the movie only collected $35.6 million against a $24 million budget. The movie is available for streaming on Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon (Buy/Rent).
Adding up the collection of Johnson’s 8 worst-performing movies, the total sum results in $607.1 million. Still being almost $339 million more than James Gunn’s The Flash.
