Despite the fact that he was one of the youngest celebrities ever to be a part of Saturday Night Live, Eddie Murphy’s comedy went above and beyond his age. While he started off his career with stand-up comedy, Eddie Murphy soon became Hollywood’s go-to guy whenever they needed a laugh.
He soon hit the superstar status, winning awards left and right. Unfortunately, Eddie Murphy’s growth eventually saw a decline and thanks to projects like The Adventures of Pluto Nash and a few other flops, Hollywood decided to push the comedian to the back of the line. However, even though he was facing a career downfall, Eddie Murphy made a pact with himself that he’ll only make films he truly wants to, and not sign on just for the paychecks.
Eddie Murphy Is No Longer In It for the Money
After being the star of back-to-back hits including, The Nutty Professor and 48 Hrs, Eddie Murphy found himself facing a career degeneration. He starred in The Adventures of Pluto Nash which could only make $7 million at the box office despite having a budget of $100 million. And suddenly Murphy seemed to have lost the comedic charm the fans adored.
Later, Murphy stated that he was only going to say yes to those projects that he feels are worthy of his time. And it didn’t matter if the gig paid generously or not. Talking to The Washington Post, Murphy stated, “The check movies are over for me.”
With a net worth that touches $200 million, Murphy does not have to worry about bringing in the paychecks, either. It’s truly commendable that he is more focused on his art now.
Scripts are the Most Important to Eddie Murphy
During his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the comedian stated that the script had to be “just perfect” in order to have him on board as he added, “because I don’t wanna do anything else that sucks ever again … I don’t wanna suck no more.”
Murphy played the role of Axel Foley in the 1984 film, Beverly Hills Cop. The actor then went on to reprise his role for two sequels, with the last one having been released in 1994. And now, fans are wondering if he will once again put on the detective’s thinking cap for a fourth film.
On Desus and Mero, Murphy once stated that he won’t be doing another Beverly Hills Cop film unless the script is truly incredible.
“They’ve been trying to make another Beverly Hills Cop for 15 years now. Right now, Netflix has it and they’re trying to develop a script. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing next. But, I’m not doing nothing until the script is right.”
Well, a fourth film has finally been confirmed and Murphy is all set to be the star of the franchise once again. It looks like the script must have really, really impressed the comedian! The film will be titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. There is no confirmed release date as of now.
