Jennifer Lawrence played Mystique in the X-Men franchise. She played a shapeshifting mutant first taking the role in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class. The role was one of the major turn of events in her career. Till this point, the Red Sparrow actor had only appeared in independent films. Her X-Men franchise role widened her reputation as an actor establishing herself in Hollywood.

Despite being in new territory, Lawrence was able to prove her prowess as an actor. The franchise was a huge success, grossing over $6 billion at the global box office. Of course, the series had an ensemble cast, but Lawrence’s Mystique became a fan favorite.

But the role was never easy, Lawrence admitted. She took up yoga to play Mystique but mostly, she had to endure a lot of time spent in the makeup chair. Mystique’s makeup was extensive, she had to endure up to eight hours daily with the blue body makeup applied. In 2015, the actor shared her experience of playing Mystique and wearing her costume for that long. “I love these movies — it’s just the paint [I hate],” Lawrence said. Later in 2016, the actor appeared on The Graham Norton Show, she discussed the unique challenges she had to face wearing makeup preventing her from going to the bathroom. “The guys who made it were like, ‘Well, she’s a girl. She doesn’t go to the bathroom,” she said. “So, I pee standing up out of a funnel.”

Her X-Men debut made Lawrence a huge star, she appeared in another big franchise The Hunger Games, and later played Mystique in  X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.

Jennifer Lawrence already had a taste for the extreme hair and makeup rules from the X-Men franchise. She was no stranger to the character’s demands anymore. The action star also had to go through several difficult on-set situations in some of her later movies. While filming Francis Lawrence’s 2013 movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Lawrence had to dye her hair dark brown for her character, Katniss Everdeen. Further, to spot her easily in the crowd in a distance shot, the makers wanted her to wear a distinct braid style. Later, Lawrence revealed that by the time she wrapped on the film her hair was badly damaged due to the hair job on set. The damaging effect on her hair prompted the actor to cut her hair into a pixie cut. Cutting it short did recover most of her hair, and also brought out a fresh look. Growing out her naturally dark blonde hair helped bypass the severe effect she had after the film.

Further, the actor played a Russian spy in Red Sparrow. Her character was a master of disguise, constantly changing her look- meaning more makeup and hair job. In her most recent film, Don’t Look Up, she had a distinct look with a nose ring.

Lawrence is set to appear in Gene Stupnitsky’s comedy No Hard Feelings, the movie is set to release on 23 June 2023.
