Cameron Diaz might have effectively retired from acting now, but once upon a time, she had a flourishing career with films like The Mask, Gangs of New York, Charlie’s Angels, and more. Along with a great acting career, she had a lively dating life as well, especially back in the early to mid-2000s with a famous singer.
Now, actors and actresses are always encouraged to be kind, polite, and calm to media and fans even in the toughest of situations. After all, having a positive reputation helps build their brand and fanbase. However, Cameron Diaz forgot this golden rule once and that brought her fans’ wrath upon her.
How Cameron Diaz’s Reputation Got Razed To The Ground Due To One Mean Comment
Jann Wenner, the co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine, wrote in his memoir, Like a Rolling Stone, that Cameron Diaz wasn’t as good as she seemed onscreen. He alleged that she had wished that one of his magazine staffers would get cancer. But why would an actress who had a good reputation say something this vicious?
Fans seemed to think it was apparently because the magazine had published photos of her kissing musician Justin Timberlake on a surfboard during their 2006 Hawaii vacation. However, this didn’t stop her from receiving a barrage of hate from fans who termed the actress rude for her cancer curse.
One commentator said, “She seems a nasty piece of crap. Terrible thing to say. It is a devastating disease.” Another one chimed in saying, “Isn’t she known to be rude and nasty?? Guess this confirms the rumors from people that have met her.” However, nowadays Diaz doesn’t have any reason to care about such comments. After all, she has effectively retired from acting.
Why Did Cameron Diaz Step Back From Acting And Hollywood?
In 2018, Cameron Diaz announced that she was done with the film industry. Even before that, she had barely chosen to work. Her last film was the 2014 Annie. But why did she suddenly choose to put down her acting tools? It’s because she wanted to gain her mental health back. In an interview with Kevin Hart on his Hart on Heart podcast, the Bad Teacher star said:
“When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time… all parts of you that aren’t that, has to sort of be handed off to other people… Just, the management of me as a human being… Cameron Diaz is a machine. But for my personal, spiritual self, I was realizing that one part of me that functioned at a high level wasn’t enough.”
Diaz further explained in another interview that she had to retire to gain control over her life and fix some important relationships. She said :
“I had to basically take it back and take responsibility for my own life. That’s my job. There’s a lot of things I had to iron out, a lot of relationships I had to repair, a lot of relationships I had to build that were absent in my life.”
Even though Diaz had effectively called it quits, she still came out of retirement to do one film- Netflix’s Back in Action with Jamie Foxx. It doesn’t look like she has any plans to continue after this in Hollywood again.
