One of the things that closely associates the Hollywood star with the web-slinger is his humble and shy nature. This could be the reason why he prefers to keep his personal life as secret as possible. The Spider-Man star has been in relationships with some high-profile women in Hollywood and always tries to keep his relationship away from the limelight.
However, it was not the same when he started dating his Spider-Man co-star Kirsten Dunst. They got together while working on the 2002 film. However, neither of the actors openly talked about being romantically involved with the other. And this could be the reason why the Brothers star got uncomfortable when his ex-girlfriend was mentioned during one of his interviews.
Tobey Maguire’s Reaction to Kirsten Dunst Deemed Not Pretty Enough to Portray Mary Jane
Tobey Maguire seemed visibly uncomfortable after his ex-girlfriend Kirsten Dunst was mentioned during his appearance on The Howard Stern Show. The conversation started with how the Babylon star got the role of Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2002 film.
However, the host of the show shifted the topic of discussion to Maguire’s co-star and love interest in the film. He said, “You go on the set, you actually fell in love with Kirsten Dunst.”
Mentioning another guest on the show, Robin Quivers, Howard Stern said that she thinks that the Jumanji star was not pretty enough to portray Mary Jane in the Spider-Man film series. “She is not the girl next door, she is the pretty girl who is trading up on her looks,” Robin Quivers said.
While the host of the show and Quivers expected to get a reaction from The Great Gatsby star, he quietly looked at the two discussing his ex-girlfriend. Howard Stern then appreciated Dunst casting and performance in the film saying, “I think she’s a good choice. It shouldn’t be too hot to check.”
Tobey Maguire also shared that the makers auditioned multiple actresses for the role and Kirsten Dunst was “by far the best actress.” However, he was interrupted by the host as he started talking about his relationship with the Bring It On star.
While the host continued talking about his relationship with Kirsten Dunst, the Pleasantville star awkwardly smiled and said that they were just friends.
Kirsten Dunst Wants to Return as Mary Jane
During her interview with Marie Claire UK in 2017, Kirsten Dunst was asked about the Spider-Man reboot starring Tom Holland. The American actress said, “We made the best ones, so who cares?” She claimed that they can try and continue “milking that cow for money,” but Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man is still the best.
Later during an interview with Variety, the Hidden Figures star shared that she wished there would have been a fourth installment in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film series.” I wanted to be in that movie so badly. I loved it, and I wish we could have made a fourth,” she said during her interview.
She went on to claim that everyone liked Maguire’s Spider-Man and shared that she has not seen Tom Holland’s Spider-Man reboot. Dunst said, “Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C’mon, am I right or what? Listen, I’d rather be in the first ones than the new ones.”
While fans expected to see Tobey Maguire after he reprised his role in No Way Home, director Sam Raimi shared that he does not have any plans for a fourth installment in the Spider-Man film series.
