Not many people remember that actor George Clooney was briefly married to actress Talia Balsam between 1989-1993. Clooney shocked everyone with the announcement as he had maintained that bachelor persona for many years and claimed that he had no plans to settle down soon.
Their marriage was shortlived as Cooney filed for divorce in 1992 claiming that he “wasn’t very good at” marriage and has no plans of getting married again. The actor took the blame and said that he didn’t give Balsam a fair shot. In the end, during their divorce proceedings, Clooney offered Balsam everything she thought was “fair,” risking his valuable assets.
George Clooney got married to Talia Balsam in 1989
In 1984, Hollywood stars George Clooney and Talia Balsam met each other while working together in a “local play.” They immediately got close and started dating but due to some issues, they broke up. However, they got back together and this time, they were serious.
In 1989, Clooney proposed to Balsam, and the two got married in Las Vegas in December 1989. Their marriage was no less than a fairytale for them. On multiple occasions, Clooney expressed his love for Balsam.
The two got divorced in 1992
In 1992, Clooney filed for a divorce with exact reasons still unknown. Their divorce was finalized in 1993. In 1995, the actor told Barbara Walters that he “won’t marry again,” explaining that he “wasn’t very good at” marriage. In 1996, the actor told Vanity Fair,
“I probably – definitely – wasn’t someone who should have been married at that point. I just don’t feel like I gave Talia a fair shot. I was responsible for the failure of that marriage.”
After their marriage ended, both of them continued to pursue successful careers in the entertainment industry.
George Clooney gave Talia Balsam everything she thought was “fair“
During their divorce proceedings, Clooney was ready to give Balsam everything she thought was “fair” because he blamed himself for the failed marriage. The actor said at the time,
“I would say to Talia, ‘You tell me how much — what you think is fair. I’ll write the check. I won’t negotiate.’ Instead, I paid $80,000 in lawyers’ fees. And that makes me crazy.” In another interview with LA Times, the actor said, “She didn’t do anything to me. We had a relationship that didn’t work out, most of it is my own fault. That’s not me trying to nail me first. I can look at it like it was a TV show. I was the one in the relationship who wasn’t willing to fix things.”
Despite claiming that he won’t marry again, Clooney later married Amal Clooney in 2014. Their relationship has been going well so far and the two also share twins Ella and Alexander.
