After Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods failed to replicate the success of the original film, the cast, and crew of the film were disappointed as the film took a head-first dive at the Box Office. However, David F. Sandberg was not surprised with the performance of the film as he forecasted that the film would be a massive failure at the Box Office. The sequel marked the worst opening in the DCEU franchise, and in the later weeks, the sequel performed even worse.

While Zachary Levi accused that the film was not marketed properly, the film was bombarded by critics who pointed out numerous flaws which led to the failure of the film. Recently, David F. Sandberg left a hilarious comment on Letterboxd for Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods and fans are finding it hilarious.

David F. Sandberg’s Review for Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Recently, David F. Sandberg left a review on Letterboxd on his recent project, where he wrote that the film was “unwatchable” and if someone could point this out to the director of the film.

“Billy and Shazam have different personalities. I really wish someone would point this out to the director. Unwatchable!”

While the director of the film acknowledged the shortcomings of the sequel, fans soon went to Twitter to share their opinion on Sandberg’s review of Shazam 2.

A user shared a screenshot of David F. Sandberg’s reviews of his old films and tweeted how self-criticism is a good thing.

Another user praised the director for his work ethic and professionalism, as he is one of the “real directors” who make successful films, unlike some people who would only criticize him.

Another user tweeted that the review that the director left for the film was not hilarious because this problem has been pointed out by numerous viewers ever since the first film hit the big screens. They also pointed out how Shazam could have showcased Billy’s moody behavior or been a little more confident than his younger self.

Another user pointed out the same issue with the protagonist, where Billy was great whereas Zachary Levi was acting childish, failing to show the complex emotions of the young Billy.

A fan of the director stated that David F. Sandberg is acting like one of those few people who did not like Shazam!

While David F. Sandberg pointed out that the sequel was unwatchable. Many fans including the director knew that the film would be a flop at the Box Office. But why did the film fail to impress the audience in the post-pandemic era?

Reasons Why Shazam! Fury of the Gods Failed at the Box Office

While David F. Sandberg was not surprised by the poor performance of the film, because he pointed out two key reasons why his sequel failed to impress his audience in the theatres.

Firstly, the Lights Out director stated that the film was not properly marketed. The team involved in marketing the film did a below-average job because casual movie watchers did not have any idea that a sequel would hit theatres in March. While marketing does not seem to play a hefty role in the movie industry, it is quite important to create anticipation among the viewers for the film.

Secondarily, the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the Co-CEO of DC Studios created so much hype among the DC fans that it shadowed the fact that a sequel to Zachary Levi’s Shazam! would be hitting theatres in March. Moreover, James Gunn stated the franchise would have a place in their reboot depending on the performance of the sequel, which has put up a lot of questions including Zachary Levi’s future in the DCU.
