Since the inception of Marvel Studios, Samuel L. Jackson has played the iconic role of Nick Fury. As a character that played a pivotal role in forming the Avengers through his position in S.H.I.E.L.D., there’s no doubt that Fury is an important part of the MCU. However interestingly, Jackson’s character has been relatively underground in recent years. Despite his significance in various Marvel Studios plotlines, he has been notably absent from major crossovers like Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame.
Hence, in a recent interview with Empire magazine, Jackson, just like the fans, expressed his curiosity about why such a key figure has not been present during the most significant moments of the fictional superhero world.
Samuel L Jackson revealed that he was confused by his absence
Although Nick Fury was absent from various crossovers, he has been part of the story. Especially in Avengers: Endgame, when it was indicated that Fury fell victim to Thanos’ snap, joining the ranks of those who were affected.
However, unable to grasp the nuances of his absence from the $1.15 billion grossing 2016 sequel Captain America: Civil War, Jackson shared his confusion in an interview. He said,
“I was trying to figure out where I was during Civil War when the kids were fighting, and I wasn’t there to say, ‘Everybody go to your room.’ Where was I during Endgame? It’s harder for me not to be there than to be there.”
Reportedly as MCU enters Phase 5, Nick Fury is set to return to the forefront of Marvel Studios with the upcoming Secret Invasion series.
Samuel L Jackson on playing a vital role in Secret Invasion
As per the details available, Secret Invasion will see Nick Fury as the main protagonist, leading the charge to prevent a Skrull invasion on Earth. Fury’s absence was hinted in one of MCU’s post-credits scenes from Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Moreover, Jackson also indicated that the Secret Invasion series will play a vital role in understanding the events of The Marvels, an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie scheduled for release in November. While the Pulp Fiction actor did not divulge further details, his statement suggested a significant connection between the two projects.
Undoubtedly, Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Nick Fury. And it looks like the Secret Invasion series promises to shed light on his former whereabouts during crucial events and will hopefully address the curiosity surrounding his absence.
