Dwayne Johnson Announces a Live-Action Moana Movie
Disney is getting back to its roots — this time with a twist. The past decade has been witnessing an uptake in live-action films of some of Disney’s most famous in-house classics. But just as remakes and adaptations increase in frequency, the creative juggernaut also takes the liberty to spin the age-old familiar tales and give them a new tune to bring something more to the already saturated tales from our childhood.
We have witnessed that shift in 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman and 2014’s Maleficent. At the same time, adaptations such as Cinderella (2015), Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), and Mulan (2020) all aim to bring the fascination, wonder, and nostalgia packed within these famous and timeless stories.

One of the latest characters to be inducted into the ranks of a Disney princess is Moana, the sea-loving Chieftess of a Polynesian island village. In 2019, she officially became the twelfth member of the esteemed and coveted roster, 3 years after her debut in the animated feature film starring Dwayne Johnson (Maui) and Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) as voice actors. Now, both actors are set to return and reprise their roles in Disney’s live-action remake of the 2016 film.

The House of Mouse hasn’t been doing so well recently. With the shift in management, the replacement and rehiring of the Bobs, and a dramatic hike in the production of Marvel and Lucasfilm projects via the streamer, Disney is in the middle of taking over the industry. At the same time, however, controversy mars the company with some of its latest endeavors (re: the upcoming live-action Little Mermaid project).
In the midst of all the spectacular drama, Dwayne Johnson utilizes the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone by announcing the live-action Moana movie, although the fans are not too quick to hop onboard the Dwayne train as he comes crashing into 2023 after the mind-numbing humiliation of his 2022 fiasco.
Despite the fact that the film has only recently been announced, backlash already follows close regarding the casting choice. And considering how the film will serve as a remake of the animated feature, the idea of Cravalho, who is currently 22, playing the young Moana doesn’t sit well with the fandom. However, even as fans remain skeptical of Dwayne Johnson’s well-meaning intentions, The Rock trudges on through the fog of cynicism and backlash as he readies himself for the epic line-up of projects in the years to come.
