Despite the success of the 2018 heist movie, Sandra Bullock looks forward to several changes in the sequel to Ocean’s 8. The news came out after the Oscar-winning actress stated a list of things that are necessary to put Ocean’s 9 on track. The most prominent change she demanded was changing Gary Ross as the director of the sequel, even after his remarkable track record.
Ocean’s 8 by Gary Ross, released in 2018, is a spin-off to the Ocean’s trilogy by Steven Soderbergh. The movie earned $298M worldwide and was victorious in continuing the success streak of the original trilogy. The excellent reception of the movie led the fans to speculate more additions to this all-female-led Ocean’s spin-off.
Sandra Bullock’s thoughts on Ocean’s 9
Last year when Sandra Bullock was busy promoting her romantic-adventure flick The Lost City, she revealed new details about the possible sequel of the movie. In an interview with Screen Rant, the 58-year-old American actress commented that besides the availability of the ensemble cast, she was also expecting a set of a brilliant female writer-director duo for the sequel to be kicked off.
“Well, the nice thing is, we still have our text chain. So our text chain’s still very active. You need to coordinate people’s schedules, find a badass female director, an incredible female writer and come up with a story that no one would expect, that only women could pull off.”
Although Sandra Bullock revealed that the discussions were active, her demand for a new female crew to pen the story created some buzz among the fans. Gary Ross who directed the first movie is already a four times Oscar-nominated name. Even though Ocean’s 8 was not flawless, it was quite a successful project. But looks like The Proposal fame has something different in mind.

Besides Sandra Bullock, another Ocean’s 8 star Sarah Paulson also expressed her excitement about a sequel to the movie during a conversation with ET. Interestingly, the potential sequel will also see an addition to the star-studded heist group which already has some big names like Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkafina. On the other hand, there are also some updates on the expansion of this Ocean’s universe.
What’s upcoming for the Ocean’s franchise?
While we are yet to hear official news about the progress on Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean storyline, some rumors suggest that we might get Ocean’s 14 which will follow the events of Ocean’s 13. It is rumored that this movie can bring back the trio of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon to continue Soderberg’s trilogy. It must be remembered that the possibilities are very foggy, given we have lost some of the original cast members, namely Bernie Mac and Carl Reiner.

But as we are uncertain about Ocean’s 9 and Ocean’s 14, an Ocean’s prequel set in 1960s Europe is officially in development. As of now, this project will star the Barbie stars, Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, but following the trend of the other movies in the franchise, the presence of an ensemble list can also be expected from this one. More updates are yet to be released.
Ocean’s 8 can be streamed on HBO Max while the original trilogy can be rented on Apple TV+.
