Though the year 2020 has not been a great one for the MCU movies, Marvel Studios has been aggressively making strides on the television front. The launch of Disney+ platform has provided Marvel Studios to expand its universe on the smaller screen. And now, legendary actor Samuel Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury in a separate series for the streaming platform.
In an exclusive for Variety, it has been confirmed that veteran actor Samuel Jackson shall be returning to play the role of Nick Fury in the upcoming series for Disney+. The former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury made his debut in the post-credits scene of Iron Man (2008) to introduce the Avengers Initiative. A major character in MCU’s Phase One, Nick Fury brought together Iron Man and Captain America to fight Loki and his army of Chitauri in the Battle of New York in Avengers (2012).

Earlier, it was speculated that the upcoming Nick Fury series would have a different actor playing the role as the show was planned to depict the life of a young Nick Fury, raring to prove himself. However, roping in Samuel Jackson is a pleasant surprise as the upcoming show will now focus on the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s adventures in the present era, since S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer exists.

One of the vital characters in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury sabotaged HYDRA’s secret plan to neutralize millions of people who were detected to be a threat to the rogue science division of Nazi Germany. However, his role became limited to cameos post The Winter Soldier, as the Avengers started fighting more extra-terrestrial threats. Nick Fury did return once again in Captain Marvel (2019), which also finally explained his damaged eye.
The exact plot details of the upcoming show are currently under wraps, but multiple sources have stated that the acclaimed screenwriter, Kyle Bradstreet is attached to the show as the screenwriter and executive producer. Kyle Bradstreet is known for his work on the critically acclaimed show Mr. Robot, for which he won the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: New Series.
Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. Known for playing unpredictable and violent characters, Samuel L. Jackson quickly rose to fame for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction in 1994. As a frequent collaborator with Tarantino, Samuel L. Jackson has made his appearance in Jackie Brown, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight.
Samuel L. Jackson also played the role of Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He also received widespread acclaim for his role in Unbreakable (2000) and Snakes on a Plane (2006). In recent years, Samuel L. Jackson made his appearance in Kong: Skull Island (2017), The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017), Incredibles 2 (2018), and Glass (2019).

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Samuel L. Jackson was last seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home in an unknown Skrull spaceship somewhere in deep space. As S.H.I.E.L.D. is pretty much finished in the MCU, it won’t be shocking to see Nick Fury heading a similar organization named S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) which made its appearance in the first trailer of WandaVision. Yet, the main question remains, can Disney altogether avoid Samuel L. Jackson’s famous phrase which was abruptly cut in Avengers: Infinity War?
