Ryan Reynolds is all set to make his return as everyone’s favorite lunatic assassin in Deadpool 3 in 2024. The third chapter of Wade Wilson’s humorous adventures would add Reynolds’ name to the list of very few actors who have played key roles in both the DC and Marvel franchises.
His stint as Hal Jordan in Green Lantern in 2010 fared so poorly at the box office that ideally by now fans should’ve forgotten all about the $220 million box office disaster. To add more grim context to the worldwide collection, the movie had a production budget of $200 million.
Remarkably, thanks to the Canadian star’s sense of humor, one way or another DC Studios are continuously reminded of their failure to do justice to one of the DC comics’ most iconic characters.
How Much Did Ryan Reynolds Earn From Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds never shies away from taking a dig at Green Lantern, the movie that sees his character Hal Jordan transform from a reckless test pilot to a superhero with plenty of responsibility after finding himself in possession of an alien ring.
Even when he assumed the role of a different superhero, Deadpool in 2016, The Proposal star didn’t forget Green Lantern and made a joke about the superhero’s costume, asking for his suit to be not green or animated.
He kept the self-deprecating humor going in the sequel in 2018, wherein his character goes back in time during a post-credits sequence and murders Ryan Reynolds before he could do Green Lantern. “You’re welcome, Canada,” the superhero said.
For Reynolds, a lot was wrong in the movie that had the potential (and a big budget) to really make an impeccable mark, but eventually, it became the butt of everyone’s joke. And considering his paycheque for the flick, it seems the actor must’ve also laughed on his way to the bank.
It’s understood the 46-year-old was paid $2 million up-front and a further $22 million after the movie premiered.
David Beckham Once Trolled Ryan Reynolds for Green Lantern
Reynolds hasn’t just used Twitter (now X) and his Deadpool movies to troll Green Lantern. He once joined hands with soccer icon David Beckham to make fans laugh at the expense of his string of flops, including the DC-based superhero movie.
The duo, who both now incidentally own soccer clubs in the MLS and the EFL, collaborated for a skit in 2018. In the video, Reynolds turns up at Beckham’s house to apologize for making fun of his voice in Deadpool. He wins over the Englishman with tickets to a soccer match.
Beckham confesses he can’t stay mad at the actor, who then quizzed: “What did you think I was apologizing for?” “Green Lantern, R.I.P.D, Self/less, Blade: Trinity,” Beckham sharply replied [via 20th Century Studios].
Going by the precedent, we can’t wait to see what Reynolds has in store concerning his flop movie in Deadpool 3.
