Ryan Gosling has been Hollywood’s eye candy for several years. The Canadian actor has created a rapport for himself by starring in movies such as La La Land, The Gray Man, and the upcoming Greta Gerwig directorial, Barbie.
As per reports, Ryan Gosling was asked to star in Fifty Shades of Grey back in 2015. The Gray Man actor, however, outrightly refused the script which made the creators eye Robert Pattinson for the role.
When Ryan Gosling Rejected Fifty Shades of Grey
Prior to Fifty Shades of Grey becoming a billion-dollar franchise, Ryan Gosling was eyed for the role of Christian Grey. Not only was he eyed for the role, but the script was entirely developed around Gosling’s persona and his character.
As per revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, when the creators of Fifty Shades of Grey approached the Drive actor, he refused the script to focus on other projects. As heartbreaking as it sounds, many other notable actors also rejected the script, until Jamie Dornan took up the mantle of being called Christian Grey.
As stated in their article, Ryan Gosling had been the actor that the script had been revolving around since its creation. After the script was finished, the creators approached Ryan Gosling, which he outrightly refused. That wasn’t the end of the series of castings, since Charlie Hunnam was also finalized for the role before he dropped out.
How Jamie Dornan Was Cast In Fifty Shades of Grey
Before finalizing Jamie Dornan and after being rejected by Ryan Gosling, the creators decided to fixate on Charlie Hunnam. The Fifty Shades of Grey franchise had also eyed Robert Pattinson for the role, however, he too shied away from the script.
Charlie Hunnam was onboard for the film and Jamie Dornan was kept as a kind of “backup actor”. It was fortunate for Dornan however as the King Arthur actor decided to back out of the project too. Jamie Dornan’s portrayal of Christian Grey was the breakout role that the actor needed. The Fifty Shades of Grey franchise spanning three films became a billion-dollar franchise and made Dornan a memorable name.
As for Ryan Gosling, the actor is all set to share the screen with Margot Robbie and Will Ferrell when Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie hits theaters. Barbie is currently slated for a release date of 23rd July 2023.
The Fifty Shades of Grey franchise is available to rent on Apple TV+.
