Canadian actor Ryan Gosling has starred in a number of critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies throughout his career. The 42-year-old actor has explored most of the genres including action, comedy, and romance. However, he is still to feature in a superhero movie, despite having the opportunity several times. One of these opportunities also includes the role of the DC villain, Joker, in the 2016 film Suicide Squad.
According to The Wrap, before the role eventually went to actor-musician Jared Leto, the La La Land star was initially approached to play Joker in the 2016 David Ayer film.
Ryan Gosling Was Initially Approached to Play Joker
Although the 2016 film Suicide Squad was a financial success, it was not very well received by critics and DC fans. It ended up being the lowest-rated DCEU film on Rotten Tomatoes and one of the things fans did not like about the film was Jared Leto’s portrayal of the DC supervillain, Joker. Many also consider it to be the worst on-screen interpretation of the supervillain.
But there was a possibility that the character could have been portrayed by another actor, as the role was initially offered to Ryan Gosling. He was approached to portray the Joker in the DCEU. However, The Gray Man star was not interested in signing a multi-movie deal with the studio.
Insiders shared the news saying that he was not willing to sign a deal that has the possibility of starring in multiple movies. Ironically, the Suicide Squad actor only had brief appearances in the DCEU. Followed by the 2016 film, Leto only had a cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and has not reprised his DC role since.
This was not only DC or superhero role offered to Gosling, as he has received other offers well. However, he is only interested in playing one superhero character and claims that superhero movies are not for him.
The Only Superhero Ryan Gosling Wants to Portray
Other than Joker, Ryan Gosling was also offered the lead role in the 2011 film Green Lantern. The movie eventually went to Ryan Reynolds. The Blue Valentine star was also allegedly in line to join the MCU as Doctor Stange, along with several high-profile actors from the industry.
When he was asked during an interview if he is involved with the DC film Green Lantern, he said that superhero movies are not for him as he finds them very hard. He praised the actors featured in the superhero movies and called them great actors for being able to pretend and act according to the situation in the CGI films.
Although The Notebook star does not enjoy working with superheroes, Gosling shared that he eagerly wants to portray a superhero that seems inspired by Captain America and Captain Britain. “I was waiting for the Captain Canada call,” he said during an interview.
Suicide Squad is available to stream on HBO Max.
