Russell Crowe’s rise to fame was an epic success story. In 1999, he was one of many aspiring actors in Hollywood who appeared to be somewhat promising. By the year 2000’s end, he was a huge star, an action hero with acting skills who could change into different characters at will.
The New Zealand-born actor has appeared in blockbusters like Gladiator (2000) and A Beautiful Mind. However, it appears that the 59-year-old legendary star is thinking about taking a break from the acting industry.
The Man of Steel star will hit a significant turning point in his life the following year, and he predicts one of two outcomes. Crowe will either continue working into his 80s like his longtime friend and collaborator, Ridley Scott, or he will completely leave Hollywood and disappear from view.
Recently, the acclaimed actor has been a colorful presence at the Czech Film Festival, accepting a prize for his outstanding contribution to world cinema and entertaining the audience with his charisma. He also gave an explanation of why now is the time for him to think about retiring.
Is Russell Crowe Retiring From Acting?
Despite being a huge movie star, Russell Crowe might not be acting for much longer. Currently 59, he will turn 60, next year on 7 April.
The Unhinged actor told at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival that he has not decided if going into obscurity is the right course of action for him at this point in his life as he approaches his 60th birthday next year. As per Variety, he said:
“You are standing in front of the mirror, and go: ‘Who the f— is that?’ I am in that period now.”
Also, the actor cited the 85-year-old Hollywood director, Ridley Scott as an example of an older professional who is still working on significant projects.
“I will take Ridley Scott as my role model: he is still discovering new things in his work. Or I will just stop and you will never hear from me again. I haven’t decided what it’s going to be. These are two very valid choices.”
For the unversed, Scott’s directed film, Gladiator, took home five Academy Awards at the 73rd Academy Awards, including Best Actor honors for Crowe.
Russell Crowe On Gladiator Sequel
Well, the sequel to his critically acclaimed 2000 historical drama film, Gladiator is reportedly in the process. During the conversation at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Russell Crowe insisted that he does not want to be questioned about the Gladiator sequel as he has no involvement in the project.
He allegedly said:
“They should be f****** paying me for the amount of questions I am asked about a film I am not even in. It has nothing to do with me. In that world, I am dead [his character is dead]. Six feet under. But I do admit to a certain tinge of jealousy, because it reminds me of when I was younger and what it meant for me, in my life.”
He appears to be very disappointed about not being involved in the follow-up to his successful 2000 film, as he said:
“I don’t know anything about the cast, I don’t know anything about the plot. I am dead! But I know that if Ridley has decided to do a second part of the story, over 20 years later, he must have had very strong reasons. I can’t think of this movie being anything other than spectacular.”
The new Gladiator sequel is currently being worked on by Ridley Scott, who, unlike The Nice Guys star, has no immediate plans to retire.
Well, his recently released supernatural horror film, The Pope’s Exorcist is currently running in theaters.
