Rocket Raccoon is a beautiful character that James Gunn faithfully adapted from the comic book to his movies. The character has been so beloved and a personal favorite of Gunn that he dedicated the entire third part of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise to the character.
Talking about the end of the first movie, Peter Quill holds the Power Stone in his hands and the Guardians form a chain together to control the power. James Gunn gave a hilarious answer as to why Rocket was the last one to join the chain.
James Gunn Answers Why Rocket Raccoon Was The Last To The Chain
At the end of the first film, we see a glimpse of the power that Peter Quill could hold as he grabbed one of the six infinity stones in his bare hand. Since it was too much to bear, the whole team joined in and they were able to contain the power stone. Rocket Raccoon was the last one to grab the chain and as per director James Gunn, there was a very specific reason why he shot the scene.
In an interview, the castmates and Gunn were made to play a game wherein they had to answer questions about their own movie. When the interviewer asked who was the last person to form the chain, James Gunn promptly replied with Rocket Raccoon. The Peacemaker director went on to explain the significance of that scene and it shows how much he adores Rocket.
“It’s Rocket. It’s like one of my favorite shots in the movie. It’s that little hand reching up to grab the hand. Yeah, because he’s the most selfish.”
As the interview progressed, the director went on to give an in-depth analysis of why it was necessary for Rocket Raccoon to be the last one to join the chain.
James Gunn Deemed The Scene As The Most Heart Touching
James Gunn continued to explain the reason behind his love for Rocket Raccoon, especially in that scene. The director stated that Rocket had been a jerk the whole time but it was kind of a redemption in the end.
“I actually think it was the most touching one because the other ones are, by that time, you learn the other ones are a little bit stand up. I mean, Gamora is pretty good, Drax is okay, And then, you know, Rocket’s been a jerk the whole time, so when he does it, it’s touching.”
With a whole movie dedicated to the backstory of Rocket Raccoon, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earned a rating of 8/10 on IMDB and 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S.
