After the heart-breaking finale of Avengers: Endgame, fans collectively agree that the Avengers will never be the same without Robert Downey Jr. returning to play the fan-favorite Iron Man. Even though Tony Stark had quite a fitting and heroic goodbye from the MCU, fans cannot help but hold a glimmer of hope.
With the latest appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, Robert Downey Jr. just might have brought that hope up. Joe Rogan discusses the possibility of the actor’s return to the MCU as the “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” Tony Stark.
A Possible Robert Downey Jr. Return?
While talking about his extremely popular career in Hollywood, Robert Downey Jr. was asked if he would ever return to the MCU to play Iron Man and if Avengers: Endgame was really the end for the character. Unfortunately, he replied by saying that after the emotional sacrifice made by his character in order to save all of humanity, he has absolutely no plans of making a return.
“To me, starting up again is off the table. I feel like I’ve done all I could with that character.”
Even though Robert Downey Jr. does make a point, as fans, it is almost unacceptable that their favorite Avenger is gone for good. Joe Rogan was absolutely right when he said people would “freak out” if he was to ever make a comeback.
Robert Downey Jr. also said that in order for his Iron Man to return, there has to be an extremely compelling argument that puts all events in a straight line.
“There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff.”
Fans can all, but hope, that the writers come up with something extremely mind-blowing so they can all see Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man on the big screen, one more time.
Fan Theories on Robert Downey Jr.’s Return
In the interview, host Joe Rogan pitches his theory on the possible return of Robert Downey Jr. involving a time machine, to which the actor replies with a mere “great.”
“Here’s what I think, they go through a few semi-lacklustre Avengers movies without you. There’s a moment where the world’s fate is at stake and they’ve realized they need a super genius. Then, they figure out how to restart that time machine. You step out of that machine and the entire crowd goes wild.”
Another theory involves the Multiverse. With Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man making a box office-shattering comeback in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it wouldn’t be far-fetch to assume the same for Tony Stark. The Multiverse theory could go in any tangent, including a variant from a different universe, as seen in Loki or as Kang’s soldier in the upcoming movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, it is possible that Iron Man’s return to the MCU will have the face of someone other than Robert Downey Jr. Perhaps it’s time to close the chapter on Robert Downey Jr.’s return once and for all.
