In MCU’s Secret Invasion, a recent development unfolded, setting the scene for a heart-wrenching revelation concerning War Machine and his closest companion, Tony Stark. In the climactic final moments of the third episode of Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, an enticing hint was dropped, suggesting that a Skrull imposter had taken the place of former Avenger Colonel James Rhodes.
The fourth episode then substantiated this revelation by showcasing the true identity of his shape-shifting replacement, Raava. Presumably, the real War Machine is peacefully sleeping in an induced artificial coma, unaware of the events unfolding around him. Eventually, he will awaken from this dormant state, only to be rudely jolted into a harsh reality.
War Machine’s Revelation Makes Tony Stark’s Sacrifice More Heartbreaking
The recent revelation in Secret Invasion unveils that the character of War Machine, portrayed by Don Cheadle, is indeed a Skrull. This revelation has sparked speculation among fans about a potentially heart-wrenching implication concerning his bond with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. The prevailing question captivating everyone’s thoughts is: for how extensive a period has the real Colonel James Rhodes been missing in action?
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige hinted that the character swap may have taken place a considerable time ago, as he acknowledged that certain prior appearances of the character might not have truly been Rhodey. Herein lies the heart-wrenching aspect of this twist: Was the genuine War Machine truly present to support Tony Stark’s Iron Man during his self-sacrificial act in Avengers: Endgame?
Rather than the authentic Rhodey providing solace to Stark during his final moments, it is highly probable that it was a Skrull, merely assuming the role to maintain her disguise.

If Marvel Studios navigates the situation skillfully, they have the potential to craft a profoundly impactful, heart-rending, and emotionally charged comeback for War Machine. In fact, this turn of events serves as a powerful foundation for the character who will eventually assume the leading role in Armor Wars.
Rhodey is destined to awaken in a reality where his dearest friend perished alongside his imposter shortly after saving the universe. Additionally, he will discover that a Skrull invasion came perilously close to succeeding, and now Iron Man’s confidential information is falling into the wrong hands. It undoubtedly paints a rather unpleasant scenario for Rhodey upon regaining consciousness.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Rhodey’s prominent position within the US Government is likely to be severely undermined as a result of Raava’s actions. This revelation opens up intriguing possibilities for character development, although not everyone will embrace this decision wholeheartedly. Many will be swift to criticize how they perceive it as undermining the significance of Tony Stark’s death in Endgame.
