Robert Downey Jr is one of those stars presenting very interesting takes during interviews and press conferences. The Iron Man fame is often spotted passing witty comments during promotional campaigns and interviews. Something similar was also spotted during the tour of Captain America: Civil War where the star openly commented on MCU’s greatest rival. The Avengers actor was pretty confident that DC won’t be successful in the competition between the superhero studios.
Captain America: Civil War is still considered one of the best MCU movies. It was both a success critically as well as commercially. But back when the movie hit the theaters, there was also wide anticipation for DC’s Justice League which was to be released the next year. What happened to DC after that movie is quite a well-versed tale to all but looks like Robert Downey Jr predicted it earlier.
Did Robert Downey Jr foreshadow DC’s doom?
The 2016 movie about the rift between the Avengers provided some of the best moments of the cast members in its promotional campaigns. Among these, the European tour caught some eyeballs due to several statements made by the cast members.
Looking back, it was expected that the hype surrounding the Justice League would pave its way to the questions. The expectations were fulfilled when the question was raised if the emergence of the Justice League affected the Avengers in any way. Chris Evans gave a very clever reply to it by saying that the Kevin Feige fortress doesn’t work according to what others are doing.
“Well, I don’t think anyone here makes movies based on what other people are doing. For the most part, we do what we do because we do it well. I shouldn’t say “we”, it really is the Marvel higher ups that have figured out the formula to make these great movies.”
But the ultimate reply came from Robert Downey Jr who looked completely carefree about DC and it felt as if he knew the outcome. He jokingly remarked:
“Listen When they get a Bucky – we’ll start talking.”
DC’s woes with 2017’s Justice League are known to everyone following the absolute mess it created. From changing Zack Snyder as director midway to initiating several reshoots, the ultimate cut of the movie was brutally thrashed by everyone. DC’s failed attempt to replicate MCU’s success still affects the studio. Although a director’s cut of Justice League was released later which was far better, the SnyderVerse couldn’t become a successful venture for the company.
Why did the Justice League fail?
Following the failure of the Justice League, the studio of Superman went into somewhat of a state of uncertainty. The whole vision of the SnyderVerse was shaken and the roadmap of all the future movies was blurry. One of the major reasons why everyone was so much worried about the movie was its lack of set-up. Thus not only Robert Downey Jr but many people like the Civil War co-director Joe Russo also predicted the problems in the multistarrer DC movie.
Joe Russo anticipated one of the biggest blunders that were made by the Justice League. The 2017 movie lacked a proper set-up for all the superheroes. Russo in an interview explained how the Avengers was successful as it already made the fans well acquainted with the characters. Thus an attempt to jam-pack many things in a single movie ended up creating a pandora’s box of mess. Ultimately, everything combined led to a hard reboot under new bosses and now we are currently waiting for fresh updates from James Gunn regarding the future of the newly formed DCU.
Captain America: Civil War can be streamed on Disney+ while all the DC projects can be streamed on HBO Max.
