Glass Onion director Rian Johnson clears things up surrounding the rumor that the movie’s character Miles Bron is based on Twitter CEO Elon Musk. The filmmaker revealed that any resemblance of the fictional character with the business tycoon is unintentional.
Miles Bron, played by Edward Norton, is the main antagonist in the 2022 murder mystery film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Like Elon Musk, he is a billionaire tech entrepreneur. This is where lots of fans drew the conclusion that, perhaps, Miles Bron is based on Elon Musk.
Glass Onion Director Rian Johnson Debunks Movie Rumors
In his interview with Wired, Rian Johnson said that his movie does not have any correlation with real-life personalities, especially Bron. He even jokingly said that he hopes it is not a marketing strategy from Netflix funded by the Twitter businessman.
“There’s a lot of general stuff about that sort of species of tech billionaire that went directly into [Glass Onion]. But obviously, it has almost a weird relevance in exactly the current moment. A friend of mine said, ‘Man, that feels like it was written this afternoon.’ And that’s just sort of a horrible, horrible accident, you know?”
The director explained that he wrote Glass Onion in 2020, back when Elon Musk was not yet the content and hot topic of the Internet. He reiterated that Norton’s character was more of a representation of the archetype that many of us see in the present day. Johnson added:
“The intent was to accurately reflect what it’s been like to have our heads in the middle of the cultural sphere for the past six years. It’s a pretty nightmarish kind of carnival, Fellini-esque inflated reality right now.”
In the movie, Miles Bron sends each member of his team a wooden puzzle box that invites them to his Greek island. In this Agatha Christie-themed film, he wanted them to solve a mystery. Bron is the typical image of a tech billionaire: he likes buying houses and toys, and he is pretty much confident with all of his ideas.
Johnson On Fans Coming Up With Movie Theories
In relation to the rumored assumption, Johnson mentioned that films like Glass Onion are meant to be re-watched and dissected, and there were many things on screen that gives away all the clues if people are just too keen to pay attention. When asked about fans theorizing his works, the director answered:
“I’m trying to land every moment as best I can. I mean, it has been incredibly fun with Knives Out, even more so with Star Wars, just seeing these online communities kind of grab on to certain moments or certain threads throughout the thing and dissect them and pull them apart.”
Glass Onion was released in theaters for a week, and director Rian Johnson said that it is important to have it on the big screen even for the sake of it. While the movie can be streamed online, nothing beats the feeling of sitting in a dark room with a crowd and just absorbing the beauty of the movie.
