Square Enix and Marvel’s collaborative work, The Avengers Project, is seemingly failing based on a lot of factors. This involves two popular game titles: Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Over the last decade or so, Marvel has been partnering up with several gaming giants, such as Square Enix. The popularity of Marvel films and its iconic characters may instantly seal a deal with guaranteed success. But, that is not always the case for all Marvel-labelled projects.
Square Enix has produced many games in the past, such as Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, and Deux Ex, which all gained international popularity and commercial success. When Marvel and Square Enix announced their partnership in 2017, many fans thought it was a match made in heaven.
Marvel’s Avengers
The Avengers-themed game was a promising project for both companies. The initiative was labeled a multi-game deal and even nicknamed The Avenger’s Project, a title that holds many promises.
When Crystal Dynamics released Marvel’s Avengers, it seemed that the game was not something the fans were expecting. What was supposed to be a single-player experience turned into a multiplayer game that did not live up to its magic.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Eidos-Montreal unveiled the highly-anticipated Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021. Although the hype of MCU movies helped the game reach critical acclaim, the commercial returns failed to surpass Square Enix’s expectations.
The company admitted they were disappointed with the sales numbers. Indeed, the game publisher overestimated the return of investment of both games.
Future Plans Of Square Enix
It is very unlikely that the company will publish any Marvel projects soon. A few weeks ago, they announced their plan of selling a large amount of their infrastructure to Embracer Group. The deal is set to give Square Enix around $300 million after they transfer ownership of Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics to the other company.
