Kate Winslet is one of the most renowned names in Hollywood. She has been nominated for an Oscar seven times, of which 4 were for Best Actress, and won the same for The Reader. Not only is she an exceptional actress, but also known in the industry as one of the most genuinely kind actresses. She has had quite a bit of success, but one cannot forget about the movie that caused her rise to fame.
Titanic was the movie that launched Winslet, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, into stardom and its success carries with her to this day. The movie follows the romance of the doe-eyed socialite Rose played by Winslet, and DiCaprio, who played Jack. The movie did exceptionally well at the box office, becoming the first ever movie to make more than $1 billion, and went on to go down in history as one of the classics. So it is quite surprising to know that Winselt cannot bear to watch herself in this movie.
Why Can Kate Winslet Not Watch Herself in Titanic
During a 2012 interview, Kate Winslet talked about what it is like for her to rewatch one of her best-made films, Titanic. The actress mentioned that the entire process of rewatching her acting is quite stressful for her as she is quite critical of herself. When asked if there was a particular scene that caused her to feel this way, she replied saying that it was all of them.
“I’m like, ‘Ugh, really? Really? You did it like that? Oh my god,'” Winslet said, wincing. “And even my American accent, I look at it and I’m like, ‘Ugh, I can’t even listen to myself.’ It’s awful, hopefully, it’s so much better now.” she went on, “It sounds terribly self-indulgent, but actors do, I think, tend to be pretty self-critical, and I have a very hard time watching myself anyway,” she added. “But no, my god, I watch Titanic and just think, ‘Ah, I want to do that bit again. Can’t we go again? Please? One more take?'”
She went on to say that she has grown so much as an actress that she can’t help but be critical of her older work, which makes her want to reshoot the entire project now that she has refined her skill years later.
Kate Winslet’s Struggle With Her Sudden Rise to Fame
When Titanic came out, Kate Winslet was 22 and had done only five films. Her first movie was Heavenly Creatures, after which she kept working in the industry until the movie adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel, Sense & Sensibility came around. This movie bagged Winslet her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. However, this success was nothing compared to that which Titanic brought about.
“Back then, there were things about the experience of being made that famous that quickly that were very challenging, really challenging,” the actress said. “Nothing can prepare you for being thrown into the public eye and the media madness in the way that I was.”
Titanic broke so many records that its success cannot be measured. This sudden shift in Winslet’s life was something she could not have been prepared for. The experience of being famous, and with the media at the time being quite ruthless, which can be quite a challenge for anyone, let alone for a 22-year-old.
