Yesterday, PlayStation fans were taken by surprise in the most unfortunate way possible, and there is disappointing sadness all around. This was due to an official announcement by Sony on the PlayStation blog that very clearly stated prices for the annual PS Plus subscription will increase effectively on September 6. This update includes all three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium, but a trusted industry insider, Jeff Grubb, claims the situation will be properly addressed in a potential State of Play event, which is apparently coming sooner than gamers originally thought.
The Next PlayStation State of Play Is Apparently on Its Way
Sony has received backlash from fans after its PlayStation Plus price hike announcement, so naturally, the company has a lot to explain for damage control. Which is why a State of Play event seems like the perfect platform to address the whole scenario, and it is rumored to take place sometime in September. Only two similar events have happened in 2023, and in addition to clarifications about the increased prices, fans are also looking forward to more information regarding upcoming PS titles, especially the big ones releasing this fall.
Earlier this year, in April, the previous PlayStation State of Play showcased the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 16 in all its glory, which came out just two months after the event. This was then followed by a proper PlayStation Showcase in June, during which Sony revealed more details about its long-awaited titles, and introduced Project Q, the initial name for a new PS handheld device. The event featured many different games, including the remake of the classic Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, along with sharing exactly when titles like Alan Wake 2 and Assassin’s Creed Mirage would become available to fans.
The PlayStation Showcase 2023 also shared new trailers for sequels such as Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Spider-Man 2. Bungie participated in the event, announcing that the studio will be bringing back the fan-favorite first-person shooter IP, Marathon.

PlayStation Plus Price Hike Will Likely Be Properly Addressed
With endless news about videos games coming out literally every single day, showcases like these do not really grab the attention of gamers like they used to. However, after the latest update about the increased PlayStation Plus subscription prices, people are genuinely looking forward to any comforting statements from Sony. Fortunately, Jeff Grubb, an industry insider who has proven to be reliable with his claims in the past, has announced that he has “heard” news about an upcoming State of Play event and that the price hike actually “feels like a lead-in for that.”

As mentioned before, none of the PlayStation Plus tiers were safe from the price hike announcement, which means that subscribers of the highest tier, PS Plus Premium, will have to pay an extra $40 starting on September 6. That is undeniably a very shocking jump, so of course, fans are now looking for any kind of silver lining from Sony. PS players are just hoping for significant updates about upcoming PS4 and PS5 titles, such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Mortal Kombat 1, and Lies of P.
