In the newest PlayStation Plus Monthly blog post, PlayStation announced they are increasing the price for yearly subscribers. According to the post, the price jump:
“will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.”
PlayStation reiterated the 12-month/yearly plan is still cheaper than buying a 1-month or 3-month subscription. Even though PlayStation fans want higher quality free games monthly on top of other benefits, putting the cost on the user has made PlayStation Plus subscribers upset.
How Much is PlayStation Plus Increasing?
The blog post details the new prices for PlayStation Plus yearly packages. PlayStation Plus Essential members will now pay $79.99 compared to $59.99, a $20 increase. PlayStation Plus Extra is now $134.99 compared to $99.99, a $35 increase. Lastly, PlayStation Plus Premium is $159.99 compared to $119.99, a $40 increase.
Current PlayStation Plus subscribers will not see the increase until their next renewal date that occurs on or after November 6. If PlayStation Plus subscribers make any changes to their plan (upgrading, downgrading, or buying more time) on or after September 6, it will reflect the new yearly prices.

From a $20 to $40 increase across all PlayStation Plus membership programs, this is a decent amount of money to cough up every year. For $20 to $40, players can buy themselves small indie games or purchase older games that are on sale. With this PlayStation Plus price increase, fans are not happy. DreamcastGuy on Twitter/X called this move a “MASSIVE SONY L!”. Another Twitter/X user said they will not be renewing their subscription as PlayStation continues to not add anything new to the PlayStation Plus service.
On top of announcing this price increase, PlayStation showcased the free games for PlayStation Plus members for the month of September. PlayStation Plus users can get Saints Row (2022), Black Desert – Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero for free. According to Metacritic, all of these games have scores between 45 and 61. Saints Row (2022) on PlayStation 5 has a 61 Metascore, Black Desert on PlayStation 4 also has a 61 Metascore, and Generation Zero on PlayStation 4 has a 45 Metascore.
PlayStation’s reason to increase the PlayStation Plus 12-month subscription plan is “to continue bringing high-quality games” isn’t a strong reason when all three of these games have less than 70 Metascore and extremely low user scores. If PlayStation wanted to increase the price of PlayStation Plus, they should have offered better titles to their players with the announcement.
PlayStation Plus is a service that’s been around since 2010. It’s required for PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 users to play online multiplayer but other benefits of the program include the free monthly games and discounts. In 2022, PlayStation revamped PlayStation Plus, calling it the All-new PlayStation Plus by adding two additional tiers of the service for more games to play and cloud streaming (merging their old PlayStation Now service).
The revamp has only been around for a little over a year and PlayStation is now increasing the price to yearly subscribers. Only time will tell if PlayStation Plus users start unsubscribing or no change happens at all.
