“Nah, what is he on about?”: Original PlayStation Designer Explains the Meaning Behind the Four Symbols on the PlayStation Controller

The symbols on the PlayStation controller, have you ever thought about what they represent? Well original PlayStation designer Teiyu Goto has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons with his description of what each symbol refers to.

And some fans were quick to come out in negative voice, stating that he was wrong! Wow. Not like the guy has worked on the external design of every pretty much every console along with controllers and accessories. Oh wait, he did.

Joining Sony back in 1977 straight out of technical school, Goto first got involved with the PlayStation project in the Summer of 1993 and after bosses found out he was interested in games console work, he was given carte blanche with the design of the console and whilst the console itself was quite straight forward. The design of the PlayStation Controller took a bit longer to implement, as he found himself at odds with senior officials. But fast forward nearly 3 decades and thankfully the design of the controller hasn’t varied too much over the years.

What do the symbols on the PlayStation Controller actually represent?

Who knew the symbols on the PlayStation Controller could cause controversy

Here’s what Teiyu Goto said that the symbols represent;

“The triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one’s head or direction and made it green. Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents and made it pink. The circle and X represent ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively”.

And following the recent post on Twitter by GenkiJPN, many gamers questioned this announcement;

“X is confirm so he is wrong”.

“Bro got x and circle wrong”.

“Then why is triangle the menu for many jrpgs, shouldn’t it be square instead?”

“why sony changed x for yes and 0 for no right now? this kinda sad to me”.

“I respectfully disagree”

But thankfully not all gaming fans were so fickle. Many were actually appreciative of the explanation and were quick to praise Teiyu Goto for giving his explanation of the symbols on the PlayStation controller;

“Yeah it makes sense! I didn’t really think about triangle and square but being explained that it 100% makes sense”.

“I man square meaning paper when some games have square be the guard button makes even more sense them you would believe”.

Given the work Goto put into the original development, his comments about the symbols on the PlayStation Controllers should have really been taken on board in the first place without being dismissed out of hand. But unfortunately it’s to be expected in this day and age and people are always quick to criticise when they don’t agree with what’s being said.
