"Playing Iron Man was hard": After 10 Years In MCU, Robert Downey Jr Left The Franchise He Built With No Regrets, Why Fans Should Stop Hoping For His Return

Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man is one for the history books. Even his critics acknowledge that Downey as Tony Stark was a match made in heaven and that nobody could have played the character more perfectly than him. Even off-camera the star is every bit like his iconic on-screen character and perhaps that is why fans have been hoping against hope to have him back.

Ever since his character died in Avengers: Endgame, there have been many occasions where fans speculated he could make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but unfortunately that never happened. While many want him to come back, others reckon that it is about time they stop asking him to make a comeback since it is hard for Marvel not to ‘destroy’ the perfect ending he got.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Comic books as well, Tony Stark has been depicted as egoistic, selfish, arrogant, and eccentric the majority of the time. Famously labeled as the playboy genius, it was hard to figure out at first why fans would even love the character as much as they do.

But once you watch the entire Marvel collection of movies, it is hard not to fall in love with Robert Downey Jr.‘s portrayal of Iron Man and Tony Stark’s spectacular character development. Downey helped fans realize that there was more to Tony Stark than just being a billionaire and a superhero in a tin suit, that there was a character so in turmoil and misunderstood that he might not always show the best of himself in front of others.

The ending that Avengers: Endgame provided Iron Man was as perfect as it can be and it is hard to top it or preserve it if Marvel was to bring him back. As for Robert Downey Jr., he couldn’t have gotten a better farewell, so perhaps it is time that fans stop asking him to come back especially after he acknowledged that playing Tony Stark was hard.

While the actor himself enjoyed playing and creating the franchise he has built over the last 10 years, he acknowledges that it was hard. In an interview with The Hindustan Times, he stated,

“Playing Tony/Iron Man was hard and I dug deep.”

Despite the challenge, the Sherlock Holmes star acknowledges that he is ‘fortunate and eternally grateful’ to have had this opportunity. As for the fans, they too are grateful to have had the joy of witnessing Robert Downey Jr. play Iron Man/ Tony Stark.
