"People thought it'd be impossible": In Mission Impossible 8, Tom Cruise Performs Stunts in the Most Inhospitable Part of the Planet

Tom Cruise will soon be returning with bigger, badder, and more dangerous stunts than ever before. After we saw him riding a bike off a ramp in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, it was tough to believe that the 60-year-old actor could top the stunt in his next film.

Of course, Tom Cruise loves proving the audience wrong as he keeps pushing his limits with every film. And now, with Dead Reckoning Part One done and dusted, all eyes are on Part Two which will release next year. Tom Cruise’s co-star, Hayley Atwell recently opened up about how the next film in the franchise will take the actors to a place that not many have gone before – the Arctic.

Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has been through a lot but none of that could have been possible if the actor was not attached to the character. Performing stunts at such a high level is ‘Mission: Impossible’ for many actors but not Cruise. Cruise has time and again proven why he is one of the biggest superstars in the world as he truly enjoys going out of his way to give his fans a real and raw performance. Add to that the expertise of director Christopher McQuarrie and you have got yourself an unbeatable duo.

Now, Cruise is all set to step into the Arctic where according to Hayley Atwell a major sequence will take place. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Atwell stated that no other production has filmed a sequence in the Arctic at the scale that Mission: Impossible 8 has done.

“Nothing has ever been filmed in the Arctic for a movie of this scale. People thought that it would be impossible, and luckily, Team Mission just came in and totally invalidated that belief system. I can say that the main focus was the safety of the cast and the crew, but also the respect of the landscape out there.

The territory feels unowned in a way because it’s so majestic and raw. At times, in minus 55 with a wind chill, having to get action dialogue in that takes a tremendous amount of organization and focus. So how they put that together and weave that into the story, I don’t know, but it will remain the most extraordinary place I’ve ever been on this planet and will probably ever go.“

It looks like Team Mission is not ready to let the hype for the franchise burn out just yet. Well, when you have the literal daredevil as the lead actor, the excitement just keeps on increasing, doesn’t it?

As if Atwell’s words describing the said sequence weren’t enough, the actress took to Instagram where she shared a couple of photos from her time in the Arctic on her story. In one story, Atwell posted a mesmerizing snap of the icy cold waters of the Arctic writing, “Arctic Sailing” and drawing a little heart by the side. In another photo, the Agent Carter actress shared what is possibly one of the most stunning sunsets of all time.

She even thanked her co-star Lucy Tulugarjuk for enlightening her about the Iglulingmiut culture and expanding her worldview, stating,

“Traversing through the spellbinding Arctic landscape feels a long, long way from the little West London home I grew up in. But Lucy’s been showing all of us the ropes with her humour, kindness and wisdom. She’s from Igloolik, Nunavut; a place where people have thrived, in harmony with the ice, for thousands of years. It’s been incredible learning from her about Iglulingmiut culture, Inuktitut language, and the extraordinary traditions of her people, which she’s shared so generously…Having Lucy give me tips on how to stay warm, and telling me about how the Arctic can be a place full of resources, beauty and magic, has really expanded my worldview. The Arctic has won my heart.”

Looking at the pictures and seeing how awestruck by her time in the region, we cannot wait to see Mission: Impossible 8. If just the photos are this beautiful, can you imagine how stunning the actual film is going to look?

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is currently in theatres and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will release on June 28, 2024.
