One of Hardy’s most significant and successful movies was Mad Max: Fury Road. The film won several accolades and did great business at the box office.
However, while shooting the movie, the actor was super anxious about the prospects of the project. He thought that the film was going to fail. However, Hardy was absolutely wrong about the film and his performance. It turned out that the movie was arguably the best Hollywood venture in his career, and it earned six Oscars and was a huge success.

The actor has done significant physical transformations for his parts in movies that only a few talented stars attempt to perfect to achieve success. The London native actor has starred in dozens of iconic movies like his 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic dystopian action film Mad Max: Fury Road. The movie earned six Academy Award nominations, but Hardy once shared that he initially thought he was set up for failure when he offered this project. In a candid interview, the actor shared,
“I think in a situation like this, though, where you’re inheriting the character with the legacy like Mad Max, who’s, you know, synonymous with Mel Gibson, there’s no grey area; it’s black and white.”
The actor further shared that he was thrilled to play the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, but he thought he was set up for an immediate failure, saying,
“A lot of people are — rightly so — like, ‘If it’s not Mel Gibson playing Mad Max, then it’s not Mad Max, and I’m just not interested.’ And that’s a bit of a counterpoint to the celebration of getting a part where you’re, like, really excited to play it, to realize then that so you’re set up immediately for failure, in that sense that, those whom the Gods wish to destroy, they first call promising.”
Hardy claimed that while filming the titular movie, he thought it would not perform well and would be a failure.
Tom Hardy on His Experience Playing Max Rockatansky
In a previous interview with GQ magazine Tom Hardy opened up about working in George Miller-directed Mad Max: Fury Road and shared his experience playing the title character. Talking about collaborating with Miller, the actor revealed,
“George Miller presented us with a 300-page comic book with every single frame of the movie drawn out. We just asked questions all the time. We want to know how to please or how to tell a better story or, you know, ‘What am I saying this for?’ The motivation. And the irritant to a genius.”
He continued,
“What he has created is breathtakingly f–king intricate, and he’s fully articulated the most amazing colorful orchestration of carnage. It’s a masterpiece. And that far outweighs any fear of playing, taking on Mel’s role. Mad Max is, like, the coolest superhero that a boy could get. ‘Cause there’s no cape, there’s no rubber suit. There’s no flying.”
George Miller-directed movie boasts a stellar cast ensemble featuring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton. The movie won six Oscars and earned critical acclaim.
