Despite the disappointment of many, James Gunn will soon be bringing Superman: Legacy into theatres. While things were initially hush-hush about the project, fans are now being greeted with new updates. From the casting of the new Superman and Lois Lane to that of the rest of the characters, the updates are super exciting, to say the least.
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will see a familiar DCU actor take on a completely different role. This actor is none other than Castle star Nathan Fillion, who played The Detachable Kid in The Suicide Squad. What does this mean for TSS, though? Does Nathan Fillion’s casting de-canonize The Suicide Squad from the upcoming DC Universe? Where does this leave Peacemaker Season 2?
James Gunn Officially Decanonizes The Suicide Squad
Taking to Instagram, James Gunn officially announced the casting of Nathan Fillion and others for Superman: Legacy. Now, Fillion will be bringing to life the character of Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Of course, Fillion is not new to the DCU as he has played the role of The Detachable Kid in The Suicide Squad. This does create some confusion amongst fans about whether or not TSS is canon to the new DCU or not.
Well, Gunn has just the answer fans were looking for. In the post announcing Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced’s casting, a fan commented,
“Soooo excited James, this is going to be the greatest Superman movie!!! But what about Nathan’s character in The Suicide Squad??? (TDK) is supposed to be alive??? You are rebooting that part? How does it fit everything?? I cannot understand. Can you explain it? I’m confused.”
To this, Gunn simply replied, “DC Studios movies (and canon) start with Legacy.” There you go, the filmmaker has made it crystal clear that TSS is not canon to the upcoming DC Universe that he and Peter Safran have planned.
Coming to Peacemaker, which stemmed from TSS, is John Cena’s TV series not going to be a part of the canon? Well, according to the list of projects in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Viola Davis’ Waller is part of the upcoming DCU where she will reprise her role as Amanda Waller from TSS. The events of the series will take place between Peacemaker seasons 1 and 2. Therefore, it is safe to assume that Cena’s Peacemaker is canon.
Back in August 2022, Gunn tweeted about the canonical status of Peacemaker stating, “Yes, Peacemaker is still and will continue to be DCEU.” Only time will tell how the story unfolds.
Will There Be Another Suicide Squad?
During an interview with The Playlist, Gunn confirmed that a threequel for The Suicide Squad is not in his plans. He stated,
“Yeah, we have talked about it. But the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing.”
When asked the same question on Inside of You, Gunn simply replied, “No.” As for Peacemaker, the filmmaker confirmed that the series will be “coming back right after Superman. Since there is a long time before Superman: Legacy releases, Peacemaker season 2 is officially a thing of the far future.
Right now, fans of the DCU around the world are absolutely invested in Superman: Legacy, whether they are on Team Gunn or not. Everyone is waiting to see if Gunn will manage to pull this off. It goes without saying that the filmmaker has a lot to prove and a lot of people to prove wrong.
Superman: Legacy will release in theatres on July 11, 2025. You can stream Peacemaker Season 1 and The Suicide Squad on Max.
