When Andrew Garfield Hated His Own Movie!
Back in 2010, David Fincher released a cinematic masterpiece about the creation of Facebook. With Jesse Eisenberg in the lead role as Mark Zuckerburg and Andrew Garfield portraying the role of his best friend Eduardo Saverin, both actors were praised and hailed for their iconic portrayal.
Although the movie received an overwhelmingly positive response, The Amazing Spider-Man actor stated that he felt dissatisfied with the end result. In an interview, the actor talked about his inability of feeling satiated with his work. Garfield even went as far as to claim that he and lead actor Jesse Eisenberg “hate this sh*t”!
“I’m very rarely satisfied with how something turns out. I suffer from that kind of queer, divine dissatisfaction that most creative people have. I remember watching The Social Network for the first time, and me and Jesse were like, “Oh, we hate this sh*t. We hate it.” Everyone around us was going, “What the f*ck is wrong with you? It’s incredible.” We were like, ‘No. I ruined it. They should have cast someone else.'”
Being a great actor, Andrew Garfield further stated that he does not look just at a movie but he also tries to bring mythology to the character. Referencing his role as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Garfield had quite a lot to say about mythology and what he tried to bring to the character.
Andrew Garfield Brought Mythology To The Amazing Spider-Man
Before hell broke loose, Garfield was attached to The Amazing Spider-Man franchise for a total of 3 movies and one Sinister Six spin-off. After his removal from the franchise, the actor redeemed himself by starring in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In an interview, the actor talked about how he saw more than just a character in the movie and wanted to bring so much more to the persona of Spider-Man.
“The responsibility of modern filmmakers is the same as the person telling the story around the campfire.” Stories are the things that remind us of who we are as human beings, and we actually have an opportunity to provide deep wisdom and medicine and guidance. So for me, it was like: How do I help to infuse this with as much soul and universality as possible, knowing that millions of young people are going to be watching?”
He further continued,
“So it’s not an exercise in selling t-shirts and mugs and Happy Meals, but it’s giving young people the opportunity to feel their own extraordinariness, and their own ordinariness, and seeing someone who’s just like them struggle with those two things living inside of themselves.”
As for The Social Network, the movie earned a rating of 7.8/10 on IMDB and a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes! With dissatisfaction in his way and betrayals to face, Andrew Garfield’s The Social Network is currently available to stream on Paramount+ Apple TV.
