Chris Evans and Ana de Armas have been co-stars for a long time now. First in Knives Out (2019), then in The Gray Man (2022), and now in Ghosted. But their dynamic in the new film is different from anything they have ever done before.
Fans of Evans and Armas have known for a long time that their fave actors share an electrifying chemistry. So they wanted the two to share a romance on-screen. Their wishes finally came true with Ghosted. But simple romance wasn’t enough. The director decided to push their chemistry further for an unscripted love scene.
Ghosted Director On Exploring Chris Evans And Ana De Armas’ Electrifying Chemistry
In an interview with IndieWire, Dexter Fletcher, the director of Ghosted, talked about the equation between Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. He explained that both of them respect as well as appreciate each other. Moreover, as per the director, Evans always tries to make her smile. The director said:
“There’s a great friendship there and a familiarity. They really appreciate each other’s work. They’re real fans of one another is what I quickly cottoned onto. He really makes her laugh. I suppose they both do because she’s very funny as well.”
Fletcher explained that both of them tell each other jokes and get lost in conversations. So much so that he had to remind them to stay professional. But the director didn’t hate that they were distracted. Instead, he used their chemistry to add in an s*x scene that was unscripted but fit in with their characters. He said:
“It wasn’t in a script originally, but there’s a really nice love scene in the film. There’s a moment when they get together and I try to shoot it tastefully and in a romantic way, it’s not gratuitous. And they were like, ‘Oh, that’s not in the script,’ and I was like, ‘I think we should see that,’ and they were like, ‘Yeah, that’s a really good idea!’”
Fletcher also credited them for being cool about filming the unscripted love scene. In the end, he added that it probably wouldn’t have been possible if they weren’t on the same page or familiar with each other.
Ghosted Director Wanted To Make An Old School Modern Romance
In the IndieWire interview, Dexter Fletcher explained the central romance of Ghosted. He stated that even though he was exploring the modern phenomenon of ghosting someone after a date, the central relationship between Chris Evans and Ana de Armas was purely old school. The director said:
“Although the premise and the title suggests ghosting, which is a very modern phenomenon, there’s something still very honest and analog about the relationship. They meet at a farmer’s market — and that’s a very unusual way nowadays, people generally meet online or through some device, but these two don’t. They meet eye to eye and there’s an immediate attraction.”
Fletcher also added that ghosting isn’t the only modern element he has added to his film. He explained that there’s a role reversal. In the film, Armas is the action star while Evans is a romantic hero. The director elaborated:
“I like that it was sort of old-fashioned in this way. But she’s a very modern character, as is he really. I say he’s a hero in the film, but a hero of romance. He’s not an action hero. He’s a romance hero and she’s the action hero. She’s terrible at romance. She’s awful at it, but he’s really good at it because he goes above and beyond.”
Ghosted is receiving positive reviews from fans and critics alike. It now remains to be seen how it performs in viewership numbers.
Ghosted is now streaming on Apple TV+.
