Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers is ready to hit the big screens once again alongside Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. However, as the release date of The Marvels grows closer and closer, some fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are getting more and more vocal about why they don’t like Captain Marvel. The character is probably one of the least-liked superheroes in the MCU.
From being way too overpowered to taking a cheesy route with female empowerment, fans have a lot of complaints when it comes to Captain Marvel. On top of that, Brie Larson’s personal opinions might have to do something with the hate as well. It’s safe to say not everyone is Kamala Khan when it comes to Captain Marvel. Now with The Marvels releasing, fans are bringing up the time when the character wanted to arrest Miles Morales, a Black teenage superhero, for no solid reason.
Captain Marvel Gets Termed as a “Karen”
While “Karen” used to be a pretty common name with no hidden meaning behind it, it has become much more than that. The name is now used to usually describe a White woman who is obnoxious, entitled, and uses her privileges in a way that’s uncalled for.
So why is Carol Danvers, one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU, being deemed a Karen? Well, a fan on Twitter recalled a snippet from the comic book crossover, Civil War II, Captain Marvel wanted to arrest Miles Morales as she was of the opinion that he would eventually cause the death of Captain America through his actions. In the comic, she is seen saying, “Kid…I am sorry…but you are under arrest,’ as the other onlookers surround the two.
However, Captain America, whose safety was the one in question, stood up for Miles Morales. This scene from the comic book is what got Carol termed as a Karen. Fans have been anti-Captain Marvel for a long time now. Some are even saying that they will only watch The Marvels for either Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris or Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan played by Iman Vellani and not for Brie Larson.
Do you think this preset opinion of Larson’s character is going to heavily affect the reviews for the film? Or will the trio be successful in pulling the MCU out of the slump it is in? Could it do better than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is releasing before it? Or will it fail to impress? Too many questions!
Is The Marvels Just Like Avengers?
While this question is enough to get the fandom to collectively disagree, Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, sure thinks so. Feige told Entertainment Weekly that seeing the three gals together transported him back in time to when the six Avengers came on the screen at once.
“There’s something immensely powerful about seeing Monica and Kamala nad Carol together in a frame. To me, it’s only akin to the first Avengers movie and seeing the six of them together in a frame. It’s chill-inducing. They’re so great together and they all have different histories with another.”
Feige especially talked about Vellani’s character and stated that she will be the one to steal the spotlight. Only time will tell if Feige’s turn out to be true!
The Marvels will release on November 10, 2023.
