Not Robert Downey Jr as a Variant, Diego Luna's Andor Co-Star Reportedly Cast as Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four

It seems like perfect timing to discuss when Robert Downey Jr almost starred in the 2005 film Fantastic Four, before bagging his role in Iron Man (2008). Following the news of Robert Downey Jr.’s audition for the 2005 MCU movie, there seemed hope for fans to witness the actor finally play his desired role in the upcoming reboot. But, unfortunately, with recent rumors surfacing about MCU allegedly finding its Doctor Doom in the Andor actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the role seems like a far-fetched dream for Downey.

Robert Downey Jr Almost Starred As Doctor Doom

Not to create hype but Robert Downey Jr could have easily played the villain, Doctor Doom, in the deeply average Tim Story-directed Fantastic Four (2005). Well, for those who are unaware, the 58-year-old initially went to audition for the role of Doctor Doom in the 2005 MCU movie, before he bagged the eclectic role of Iron Man in 2008.

Although it now seems impossible, given the rapid character setup in MCU, Robert Downey Jr. would have been a very convincing villain; check his despising villainous role in the recent blockbuster, Oppenheimer. It was during a recent interview about the timeline of Marvel, that Jon Favreau revealed Downey’s career turn following his audition for Fantastic Four

I remember that Robert had come in for a general on it and I remember you had all met with him already for like Doctor Doom or something, on another project. I think he had come through on ‘Fantastic Four,’ so everybody sort of knew who he was.”

But in the end, we can say, Robert Downey Jr was destined to play the flamboyant rich guy, Iron Man. Thus, Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige mentioned liking the actor more for the role of Iron Man rather than Fantastic Four. And ever since then, the 58-year-old dedicated himself to his MCU role for more than a decade.

However, it seems MCU has different plans for the role of Doctor Doom. During a recent discussion with John Rocha, Jeff Sneider slid the rumor about the potential casting.

It’s possible Ebon Moss-Bachrach could be cast as Doctor Doom.” Jeff Sneider shared. Dropping the massive speculation bomb on his audiences, Sneider further revealed, “But he’s only in, you know, at the end of the movie, basically”.
