Tom Cruise has starred in a great number of movies that put him in the spotlight. There would be perhaps a rare find where he is not the center of attention. He always finds a way to shine explicitly in his movie. Whether it is because of pure coincidence or his massive star power, no one really complains as he is one talented actor.
He has starred in some of the most exquisite and iconic franchises including the Mission: Impossible series and Top Gun. Despite his range in movies, there have been some that did not do well and others where he was straight-up killed off. It is not very common to see Cruise’s characters not surviving, however, one particular director is quite fond of the idea.
Tom Cruise Was Not Okay With His Character Being Killed Off
Tom Cruise and Doug Liman have collaborated on quite a few movies and are once again teaming up to make the movie that will change the history of cinema. One aspect that Liman heartily enjoys while filming with Cruise is the opportunity to kill his character off. He had previously proposed the same ideas in American Made as well as Edge of Tomorrow.
“Wouldn’t it be interesting if your character dies on the moon?”
While both these movies had that idea manifested, their upcoming movie in space might not have the same happening.
“Well, not if you want the movie to make any money.”
The entire idea for the movie came to life after the director thought it would be a great opportunity for Cruise’s character to die on the moon. The Mission: Impossible actor, however, was far from okay with the idea. He even added how the only way he would get away with killing his character off would be if he did not want the movie to make any money.
Doug Liman Agreed With Tom Cruise’s Statement
Although Tom Cruise’s remark can easily be taken as a threat, it was far from it. Doug Liman was also aware of the same. He agreed to how it would make more sense that movies that have Cruise’s character killed off tend to make lesser profits.
“I’ve never actually made a movie with Tom Cruise where I have not killed him. But I think that, honestly, part of what makes our relationship special is that sort of I see the value in killing Tom Cruise.”
Liman, however, also added as to how he happens to be one of the only directors who sees value in killing Cruise’s characters. He sees the impact that has and how it can create an entire turn of events for the movies he makes.
