Back in 2016, Tom Holland appeared as a younger version of Peter Parker. Since then, he has appeared as the character in more than 5 live-action films, including Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film saw the reappearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in their respective portrayals of Peter Parker aka Spiderman.
On the other hand, ever since he made his Hollywood debut in Spider-Man (2002), Tobey Maguire has been a mainstay and juggernaut in the movie industry. These three actors have assumed the role of the Marvel Icon, appearing in more than 10 live-action films over a 21-year period.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has an impressive cast including over a dozen other A-List actors, who have reprised their legendary comic book movie roles. Fans were able to see the return of three distinct Spider-Man continuities in this film.
However, Maguire’s portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who starred in the earlier Spider-Man trilogy helmed by Sam Raimi, is conspicuously not given much screen space in this 2021 release.
Also, disappointed fans even missed seeing Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn.
Fans Missed Tobey Maguire And Willem Dafoe In Spider-Man: No Way Home
Tom Holand‘s Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the most eagerly anticipated Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Many characters from earlier Spider-Man movies, including antagonists portrayed by Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, and Willem Dafoe, are present in the film.
But what disheartened the fans was that Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe were not given much opportunity to interact in the finished movie. And this fact was not to be well received. Given the limited time and other problems, it makes sense that their screen time was cut short in the movie.
Disappointed fans raised their concerns via Twitter:
How you gonna put these two in a movie together after 19 years and not have them acknowledge each other once pic.twitter.com/6LO13HZLmw

He stabbed tobey and then Norman gave tobey a look of regret when the goblin had been cured

If I’m not mistaken they didn’t say a single word to each other? Stabbing him is not much of an acknowledgment

That’s the exact problem with that movie

They did, they just deleted the scene

Well, Maguire’s less screen time in the 2021 film may have disappointed some fans, but it makes sense given the intricate multiverse storyline of the movie.
Meanwhile, Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, played by Dafoe in Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002), is undoubtedly one of the greatest superhero movie villains of all time. As a result, many fans expected that Dafoe’s character would play a significant part in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tobey Maguire-Andrew Garfield Discuss The Making Of Spider-Man: No Way Home
The Marvel Cinematic Universe did not even exist when Tobey Maguire debuted as ‘Spider-Man’ in 2002. His groundbreaking take as the superhero role was again back in the multiverse-shattering Spider-Man: No Way Home.
When asked how the 2002 Spider-Man had a big influence on the other Super Hero movies, the actor responded:
“I want to comment on the history of the genre. For me as a kid, I was watching Super Hero movies. In my experience there are plenty of terrific films and performers who take it seriously. It was maybe more erratic, and it kind of got more cohesive in time.”
A spirited reboot of The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield was released in 2012, and a follow-up film was released in 2014. Garfield believed he had completed the part until he heard the wild pitch for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thus, he once shared his thoughts on the audition process, and working with the other Spider-Men.
When asked what was it like for him to work with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, his fellow Spider-Men? He stated:
“I think myself, Tom, and Tobey came into this going, ‘Well, how’s this gonna go?’ I’d had lovely interactions with Tom and Tobey previously; not big hangouts, but really sweet moments at parties or events – or as sweet and deep as those things can go, which is not very! But I got a really good vibe from Tom and a really good vibe from Tobey. So I was excited to get to know these guys more and to see what we could create together.”
However, it is evident that Tobey Maguire’s and Willem Dafoe’s limited screen time may have disappointed the ardent fan. But the movie has stood alone as an exciting, moving, and unexpected chapter in the Spider-Man saga.
Who knows, perhaps future MCU projects will feature more of these adored characters. After all, with great power comes great responsibility and lots of room for spinoffs.
You can watch Spider-Man: No Way Home on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
