The 45-year-old English actor Tom Hardy is no doubt one of the best actors of the time. He has not only gained worldwide recognition for starring in movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Venom but has also gained critical acclaim for his performances. The Oscar nominee is also among some of the movie stars who are known for changing their appearances according to their roles.
Hardy has taken extreme measures to transform for her on-screen characters. Reports have revealed that his training schedule and diet vary as per his characters in the movies.
Tom Hardy’s Drastic Physical Transformations
Tom Hardy has been through several body transformations throughout his career. The 2008 biographical crime drama Bronson was the first film to feature his drastic transformation into Michael Peterson. Since the 2008 film, he has opted for the same method to adapt his several on-screen characters, from Warrior to Mad Max: Fury Road.
For his role in the 2008 movie, he gained around 40 lbs within five weeks. He weighed 150lbs during the movie, and it increased to 181lbs for his 2011 film Warrior. For his role as the DC villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, he once again gained around 30 lbs, taking his total weight to 200lbs.
However, the method he opted for gaining weight is not considered very healthy. “I started eating, and my arse very quickly got very fat,” Hardy shared, talking about his role in Bronson. The Venom star opted for the same method for his DC role. Although it did help him reach the goal he aimed for, it was too much for him.
He has also admitted that he might have damaged his body too much. “I’m only little! If I keep putting on weight, I’ll collapse like a house of cards under too much pressure,” he said during an interview. Not only his diet, Hardy is also known to follow a strict workout routine and doesn’t even take a single day off.
Tom Hardy Does Not Take a Day Off From His Training Routine
Apart from his diet, which included a huge intake of sugar, processed carbs, and saturated fats, Tom Hardy also followed a strict workout plan for his roles. And he is known not to take a single day off. Hardy starts his week with shoulders, as he believes that it doesn’t require as much effort as other muscle groups.
Tuesday is for arms and chest, and the mid-week consists of legs, back & arms, followed by a full upper body workout on Friday. He spent his weekend doing physical activities like walking and hiking. He reportedly spent 90 minutes a day working out in the gym.
However, unlike his roles in Bronson, The Dark Knight, and Warrior, he was required to lose weight for his role in the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road. He had to lose 30 pounds for his role as Max Rockatansky, whom he described as a hungry and mean man. Hardy cut his diet to one meal a day to lose the weight.
“I’m training now. Even though I’m smoking. I’m meant to drop 30 pounds, so smoking and one meal a day is my training at the moment,” he shared. He also said that he had to spend seven days a week fighting for the 2015 movie. However, with time, it has started taking a toll on his body, and the Legend star has said that he has become mindful of his training routines.
