Not Doctor Strange 2 Or Ant-Man 3, Marvel Writer Says $746M Hugh Jackman X-Men Film Paved The Way For Multiverse Movies

Though the multiverse concept was easily recognized in the comics, it was a rare sighting, even an unknown and unseen one, in on-screen projects until a decade ago. However, some brave filmmakers took the bold step and went ahead to introduce this notion into movies for the big screen, paving the way for other films of this conceptualization to rise as well.

But while many will consider the 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster Doctor Strange to be the first ever movie to openly bring in the idea, film producer, director, and screenwriter Simon Kinberg begs to differ, with his opinion being that the Hugh Jackman starrer $746 million X-Men movie was the one to bring about this entire concept in the entertainment industry initially.

Simon Kinberg Feels This X-Men Movie Opened Up The Door To Multiverse Movies

Although Doctor Strange and its sequel The Multiverse of Madness along with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were the most recent movies following the parallel universe concept, Marvel writer Simon Kinberg is of a different opinion. According to him, it was Hugh Jackman’s X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) that initially opened this portal.

During an interview with Polygon, when the interviewer commented on how the X-Men franchise has been further delving into science-fiction with each new movie, filmmaker Kinberg responded by saying,

“The gateway was Days of Future Past because even though there isn’t high science fiction, like apocalypse or aliens, time travel is as big a science fiction trope. It sort of opened up what we could do because even though it wasn’t technically the multiverse thing that, ultimately, I think in some ways spawned it, it was outside the bounds of linear storytelling on Earth. It was other dimensions.”

He further went on to share how he felt that Days of Future Past‘s sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) was more inclined toward science fiction than the former.

“With Apocalypse, we entered a much more science-fiction tone. Bryan was directing the film, as he had so many of them, and it was new terrain for him. He would talk about being able to direct, like, a real, pure science fiction movie. Not space opera, but science fiction.”

While the Marvel writer is of the strong opinion that the Hugh Jackman starrer X-Men: Days of Future Past paved the way for the megaverse movies, some fans seem to agree while several others differ on his opinion.

After Simon Kinberg’s statement on the multiverse, several fans have taken it upon themselves to make his comment a matter of debate. Following the tweet from Discussing Films which brought this news to the audience’s knowledge, numerous Twitter users have been piling up to share their opinions on the same.

Some fans agreed with his comment, claiming that even though the movie wasn’t a multiverse one, it still acted as the ‘open ceremony’ for the upcoming multiverse films.

However, some others have stepped up to disagree with his statement, claiming other multiverse movies and TV shows to be worthy of that title instead.

Considering both perspectives, each of them is right in their respective positions. Regardless, we will leave it to both fans and filmmakers to decide whose opinion is more accurate.
