While Matt Damon had intended to attend the game with his family, his wife Luciana Barroso’s uncle warned him that they couldn’t take women or children along with them. Damon was initially taken aback but eventually understood what his uncle really meant.
“The craziest thing I’ve seen without a doubt was a soccer game in Argentina. My wife is Argentine, we went to spend a Christmas 11 or 12 years ago. His family is a fan of Boca Juniors, which is a very popular team in Buenos Aires and was supposed to play in a final. I said to my wife’s uncle, ‘Hey, can we go to this game?’ And he got very serious and said, ‘We can go, we can go … no women or no children.’ I said that?’. I was thinking of taking the boys and going. But I understood why when we went. I was absoloute madness.”
The experience of Matt Damon goes beyond what happens in the game. The losing team’s fans were leaving the stadium after the game. Damon thought that it was a perfect moment for them to leave. After the game, he was held back inside the stadium for an additional 45 minutes. Even after leaving the stadium, Damon was still kept in a cage with a few fans.
