John Wick 4 Director Teases Tragic Conclusion to Franchise Despite Keanu Reeves’ Return from Death

With the adventures of Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga in the John Wick franchise, it seems that the ex-assassin is finally coming to a resting place. Starring in John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves may have found peace with John Wick’s alleged death in the fourth movie. It seems that not all movies are deemed to have a happy ending.

In the post-credit scene of the movie, Caine returns to Paris to meet his daughter while a vengeful Akira is seen showing a pocket knife. The film ends on a cliffhanger and director Chad Stahelski is the one responsible for the answers.

Keanu Reeves’ John Wick May Not Have A Happy Ending

In the fourth part of the series, Wick’s grave was seen in the movie but people still clung to the hope that the ex-assassin was alive. Giving the movie an open end, director Chad Stahelski gave a cliffhanger ending and gave it to the audience to interpret in their own ways.

The one thing that people can be sure of, however, is that director Chad Stahelski and actor Keanu Reeves do not believe in a happy ending. In an interview with ComicBookMovie, the director talked about the post-credit scene and how the audience was supposed to interpret the ending. And yes, for the director, good endings do not exist.

“I think if you ask Keanu and I, we’re a little bit more hardboiled than most. You’d have to talk to Keanu, but I would bet that he feels the same as me that, in this world, I’m kind of with what you said, no one gets a happy ending. Take that for what it may. But, I think, in another world, there’s another way to look at it, like, you know, don’t look at it like does Donnie Yen’s character Caine die? Does he not? Does Akira kill him?”

The director further continued that it was actually the consequences of an action that truly mattered and not the act itself.

“I think it’s what what are the ramifications? Or what are the consequences of what just happened with more Rina’s character, Akira. Did we create another assassin? Or is she going to make the choice not to? That’s the real question. Did we pass on fate? Or did we pass on a choice? And, that’s how we look at it, but again, for me personally, as an audience member, everybody died. *laughs* I like it a little dark like that.”

Fortunately for the audience, Chad Stahelski further shared some good news that he is planning to release an extended or a director’s cut of John Wick: Chapter 4. This could mean further action scenes and further sad deaths.

In the interview, the director shared some good news that there was indeed an extended or a director’s cut in the works. Sharing that he was almost done with the work, Stahelski gave some information as to what the audience might expect in the extended version.

“I’ve been working on the Director’s Cut, the extended cut, which we’ve almost finished. There’s about another, I think, 10 to 15 minutes we put back in. We cut out a big chunk of Berlin, a whole character called The Frau, which is a pretty funny scene with John, and another scene between him and Tracker, a few other little action beats that we put back in. I mean, yeah, there’s always stuff we take out because it doesn’t fit the pacing. I think the stuff is all super quality, I love the choreo, I love the characters.”

With such notable action scenes and possibly sad endings along the way, the Keanu Reeves starrer John Wick: Chapter 4 will start streaming on Lionsgate Play on June 23, 2023.
