There is no doubt that Charlize Theron is a prolific Hollywood celebrity and one of the most sought-after actors. The actor has appeared in many successful movies, including her Oscar-winning performance in Monster.
Although she is most famous for her action role, Theron has the versatile ability to play different characters across genres. And as far as her personal life goes, the Atomic Blonde star has a different standard for dating a guy of her choice. The actor has dated several prolific actors in the past, including Sean Penn and Stuart Townsend.
Charlize Theron Said She Did Not Almost Marry Sean Penn
Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have been decade-old friends even before the couple started dating, as both celebrities have a lot of common ground. Talking to Esquire in 2015, Theron revealed that her love and passion for making films was a common ground for the actors.
“I think our friendship stemmed from mutual respect — more on my end, because I really didn’t have a body of work 20 years ago, but my love and passion for making films — that was our common ground,”
She further added,
“And also, Sean liked to have conversations outside of just making movies. That’s sometimes hard to find among friends here, and that’s where our friendship really blossomed.”
Although the former couple kept their relationship private for a while, their dating rumor came to light when they were seen together at a Halloween party in 2013. Later, in April 2015, another rumor about the actors getting engaged surfaced. Of course, she was fond of the Milk actor but quickly rejected the idea of getting married. “The moment that we’re in is just really good. It’s really good, really nice,” she told the outlet.
“The marriage thing is always so strange to me anyway. I love the possibility of anything, but I’m really enjoying myself and the everyday moment.”
The relationship, however, did not last long. As per reports, they made their last red-carpet appearance at Cannes Film Festival while the confirmed report of their split in June 2015 grabbed global headlines.
Later, talking to Howard Stern, Theron revealed that her engagement rumor with Penn was far from the truth. “That’s not true. No. I did not ‘almost get married to Sean’, that’s such bullsh*t,” she told Stern.
“No, we dated, that was literally all we did, we dated. It was a relationship, for sure. We were definitely exclusive, but it was for barely a year.”
Penn starred the Tully actor in his 2016 directorial venture The Last Face after their split.
Charlize Theron Prioritizes Raising Her Children Over Dating
Theron adopted two children— her elder daughter Jackson in 2012 and younger daughter August, in 2015. Becoming a mother to the children has been a different experience for the actor, for whom she changed her priority to raising her children over anything. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2020, the Atomic Blonde actor revealed how her priority changed after becoming a mom.
“Once I had my children, it’s not that it replaces something, or that it makes you less interested in something else. I’m still firing on all cylinders. I just think your priorities are in a place that is of high demand; it’s a lot of work to be a parent. Part of that is at the end of the day I get to bed and I think, ‘Oh my God, I wouldn’t want this day to be any different,'” Theron said.
Further, the actor told Harper’s Bazaar that she is not sure if she would want to be in a relationship anytime soon, saying, “I just feel so out of practice.”
Right now, the actor is happy with her children, but as she told Barrymore, she was open to new relationships. Unfortunately, the men looking to date her come with a different game that does not fit her life easily.
