Fans of the Mario series got some good food during today’s Nintendo Direct, with one of the biggest highlights being a full HD remake of the beloved SNES classic, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Though this coming remake appears to be dropping the subtitle, it is very much the game that has grown a large cult following over the years reimagined for the Nintendo Switch, with a two-minute-long gameplay trailer shown off, ending with a release date of November 17, 2023.

In a fun tease, the trailer opens with footage of the original 16-bit game, suggesting it may simply be a direct port or Switch Online release, before switching gears and transitioning into fully rendered HD footage of the same scene. What follows is a festival of nostalgic Super Mario RPG scenes sure to excite the game’s many devoted fans.
Super Mario RPG Finds New Life
Geno fans rejoice! A few glimpses were shown in the Super Mario RPG trailer of this beloved character. Many fans have begged Nintendo for years to add him to Super Smash Bros. and while that wish has not been granted, seeing his original outing in full, glorious HD may just be enough to satiate their appetites.

The original game struggled for years to find its way back onto Nintendo platforms. Some fans speculated this was due to it being developed by SquareSoft, which later merged with Enix to form the beloved RPG factory Square Enix. It appears Square Enix is still involved in some way with this remake with its name called out for copyright information at the end of the trailer, though to what degree is currently unknown.
The game’s deeper RPG elements make a return, with the turn-based battles showcased extensively within the short trailer released. Fans can look forward to adventuring with the classic party members from the original, including Bowser, Peach, Geno, and Mallow. Whether this remake will stick to the original game’s party lineup or add new members to adventure with is unknown, although nothing in the trailer particularly suggests there will be new party members.
Pre-orders for the game opened today on the Nintendo eShop, as called out at the end of the trailer, alongside the reveal of the November 17, 2023 release date.

In addition to this exciting new remake, Nintendo fans also got to feast on announcements for a brand new 2D Mario game, which also includes Princess Daisy as a playable character for the first time in a mainline Mario game, a remaster of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, a new sidescroller starring Princess Peach, and a surprise release for the final DLC for Mario+Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.
