Nintendo Direct: In Run up to Pikmin 4, First Two Games Drop on Nintendo Switch Today!

Pikmin 1+2 surprise dropped for Nintendo Switch today.

With the highly anticipated Pikmin 4 releasing just one month from today, Nintendo saw fit to surprise drop the first two titles on Nintendo Switch today during their newest Nintendo Direct. Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2 are available now for digital purchase on the Nintendo eShop, meaning that all four main Pikmin titles will be available on a single platform once the newest entry releases, as the third entry had been ported to the Nintendo Switch a few years back.

Each of the first two Pikmin titles can be purchased separately for $29.99USD each, or in a bundle for $49.99USD, saving buyers about $10. Pikmin 3 remains full price, so if you want to pick up all four titles in the series for the Switch, it will run you about $170. However, the upcoming fourth game is included as an option for the Game Vouchers that Switch Online members can purchase, so that could save users even more.

In addition to the surprise release of the original two GameCube games for the Switch, Nintendo also showed off new gameplay for the upcoming fourth entry in the beloved series. The newest title features a strange new feature somewhat reminiscent of the Dead Rising series in which enemies’ eyes start to glow red and they grow more dangerous and aggressive once night falls. To help combat this, there is a new ghost version of the cute plant aliens we all know and love.

There will also be a demo released for the upcoming sequel. This demo will release in one week on June 28, 2023. During the Nintendo Direct it was said that this demo “can be enjoyed even if you have never played a game in the… series before…” so it should be a good starting point for players new to the series.

A Pikmin 4 demo will release on June 28th.

What appears to be new competitive mode called “Dandori Battles” was shown for Pikmin 4 where you try to collect more objects than your opponent within a short time limit to rescue castaways. Doing so allows you to engage in more features back at your base camp, such as constructing equipment and items or upgrading Oatchi, a rescue dog that acts as your companion throughout the game.

The Nintendo Direct featured much more than just announcements for our alien plant friends, however. Super Mario fans in particular got a hefty serving of reveals, including the first new sidescrolling Mario in nearly eleven years.

With all of this news, Pikmin and general Nintendo fans alike have a lot to look forward to in the next year or so. Pikmin 4 releases on July 21, 2023 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
