In 2012, cast member Randy Couture shared that the third installment of The Expendables would begin production in late 2012 after the release of the second one. In August 2012, producer Avi Lerner shared that Nicolas Cage was signed for the sequel. The Oscar-winning actor was rumored to have been cast in The Expendables 3. He was also considered for The Expendables 2, but no confirmation ever came from the actor’s behalf.
In December 2012, it was reported that Jackie Chan had agreed to join the sequel, on the condition that he would not have a small cameo. The Rush Hour actor stated that he never refused Sylvester Stallone, but he felt the movie already had too many Hollywood legends. Jackie Chan admitted that he would have done a one-on-one fight with Stallone. However, the inclusion of other prominent actors like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, and, Jean-Claude Van Damme made him back out. Chan had later also stated scheduling conflicts.
Resident Evil fame star Milla Jovovich was also reportedly in negotiations for The Expendables 3. However, the deal could not be reached, hence Jovovich did not appear in the third movie in the franchise.
