Hugh Jackman is among some of the most prominent actors in the industry. The actor made a profound first impression with his Hollywood debut in the 2000 superhero film X-Men. Over the years, he has become a fan favorite playing Wolverine in the franchise and is all set to reprise his role alongside Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming Deadpool threequel.
However, having played the character for nearly two decades has left some unwanted impact on his body, especially on his voice. The Wolverine actor recently opened up about the same during a conversation on BBC’s Front Row.
Playing Wolverine Damaged Hugh Jackman’s Voice
As much as fans love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the actor loves playing the character as well. Although he is grateful for the love and respect he has received for playing the character, during an appearance on BBC’s Front Row, he opened up about how the X-Men role has impacted him over the years.
He shared that the growling and yelling he is required to do as the mutant superhero has taken a toll on his voice. The Prisoners star shared that it has damaged his falsetto. “My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling,” he said. He shared that the range for his role was so high that his drama school teacher would have been horrified by it.
Hugh Jackman Recalled Vocal Techniques He Learned in Drama School
Apart from his Hollywood films, Hugh Jackman is also known to feature in multiple Broadway shows. The Tony Award recipient has starred in Oklahoma!, The Boy From Oz, A Steady Rain, The River, and The Music Man, for which he needs to have a strong vocal range for his singing parts.
The Australian shared that he “learned the technique [in school] of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice.” However, the level of screaming and yelling he did while playing Wolverine would have even terrified his school teacher.
“My voice teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified by some of the things I did [in Wolverine],” he shared. Jackman also shared that he has been working with a singing teacher to get better and not repeat the damage in the future.
Following his last appearance in the 2017 film Logan, he is set to join Ryan Reynolds in the third installment of Deadpool. And he has shared that he puts a lot of effort into preparing for his role, whether it’s the physical representation of the character or vocal preparation.
Deadpool 3 is set to release on 3 May 2024.
