Mortal Kombat 1 is shaping up to be the biggest fighting release of the year, and perhaps ever, if the buzz around the upcoming sequel/prequel/reboot is found to be worthy. Franchise co-creator Ed Boon has been at it again, teasing fans of more surprises for the game at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, with promises including himself, the talent of the game and surprise guests.
Much has been made of the appearance of Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage finally, after years of fan casting and attempts, they managed to get their man. With Cage taking centre stage in the latest reveal trailer, is it a fair shout to assume he may be one of the ‘surprise guests’?

Mortal Kombat 1 Joins Other Big Names at San Diego Comic-Con
NetherRealm Studios isn’t the only gaming developer to be making an appearance, with much fanfare being made of Insomniac Games appearance, with them going all out and having a train fully decorated with their two Spider-Man characters. Nothing to that level has been done by Boon and co just yet, but there’s plenty of time.
Whilst it makes sense for the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being shown off at a heavily comic inspired event such as San Diego Comic-Con, the same can not be said for Mortal Kombat 1. However, with the recent confirmation that Homelander from The Boys will be joining the game as a DLC character in the first Kombat Pack, there’s a chance we’ll be getting confirmation of more comic original characters.
There was a leak not so long ago that, with the confirmation of Homelander being in the game, looks entirely plausible, with Peacemaker and Omni-Man rounding out the cast of comic-inspired characters. We’ll have to wait and see though. The inclusion of Homelander is less of a surprise as we get closer to the release of the fantastic show’s fourth season, with recent news indicating that the cast will be joining the Modern Warfare 2 franchise.
Homelander, Starlight and Black Noir will be jumping into Warzone, with each character’s respective capabilities being utilised in different ways. Watching Starlight run around with a sub-machine gun and then blind someone is not the crossover we expected, but like Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1, we’re here for it.
Life-long fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise are growing more excited for the game by the day, with sweeping changes being made to the established lore and gameplay. Character histories are being changed, new mechanics are being implemented and introduced, and fans are here for it, including us here at FandomWire.
The new Kameo system especially will bring a new dynamic to the gameplay, having to time and control your characters with not only your direct opponent in mind, but also the impact their Kameo fighter can have on you. Between breaking up combos, extending combos and performing unique, highly gory fatalities, the Kameo system has the chance to revolutionize the Mortal Kombat franchise.
