After weeks of teasing and hinting from Ed Boon, – the co-creator of the one of the most popular fighting franchises on the market, – the long-awaited Mortal Kombat 1 has finally been revealed. Not only was a trailer for the game shown off, but a release date for the title was also given and some are speculating that we may see even more footage for the game during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase stream, which was recently announced to take place next week on May 24th.
Ed Boon’s multitude of teases on social media, combined with the clock face teaser trailer and a handful of leaks, certainly set the stage for an exciting announcement. While confirmation had already been given that Mortal Kombat 1 will release at some point later this year, following the CEO and President of Warner Bros Discovery, David Zaslav, inadvertently dropping that bombshell during a WB earnings call in February, it is good to get a specific release date.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19th for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. This date was given at the end of an exciting CGI trailer that reintroduces several familiar faces, including Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Kitana, Mileena, and Sub-Zero. However, these characters have been reimagined to reflect the changed in the deep-rooted history of the Mortal Kombat universe, presenting a fresh take on the iconic fighters that fans have known for the past three decades.

NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. claim that Mortal Kombat 1 will take place in a “reborn Mortal Kombat Universe” shaped by the Fire God Liu Kang. Thus, the game will offer reimagined versions of beloved characters and introduce new game modes, new fighting mechanics, and an expanded roster of fighters.
The series’ signature fatalities also make a welcome return and the debut trailer provides a glimpse of some of these fatalities, showcasing some of the intense and brutal combat that Mortal Kombat is renowned for. Additionally, Mortal Kombat 1 features a new element called Kameo Fighters, which is described as a unique roster of partners who will assist players in battle.
Mortal Kombat 1 is on the way.
The story of Mortal Kombat 1 picks up after the events of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, which was the story DLC that followed the main story of Mortal Kombat 11. In that game, the villainous Shang Tsung emerged victorious over Kronika, the manipulator of time, and stole her powers. However, Liu Kang then uses his own time-traveling abilities to defeat Shang Tsung and claim Kronika’s powers for himself. With the intention of creating a New Era in the Mortal Kombat timeline, Liu Kang travels back in time to train the original Kung Lao, preparing him for the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournaments.
Mortal Kombat 1 promises to deliver an immersive and revamped experience. With its innovative gameplay mechanics, engaging game modes, and the return of legendary characters, the game aims to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise. Now that a release date has been given for the game, anticipation for Mortal Kombat 1 will only continue to build. Hopefully this will be another thrilling chapter in the iconic fighting game series.
