Mortal Kombat 1 Pre-Order Editions Detailed – What’s Worth It?

Mortal Kombat 1 has set the internet alight since its official confirmation at the PlayStation Showcase earlier this year. Franchise creator Ed Boon has been teasing fans for months and expectations were high and before the reveal the main question was whether it was another Mortal Kombat game, or the man’s other fighting franchise Injustice.

Obviously we now know the answer to that particular question, but expectations have been rising sharply with every little nugget of news released by the man himself and the studio. It’s not unfair to say that after Mortal Kombat 11, fans have never expected or wanted more from a fighting game. Part of the big three along with Tekken and Street Fighter, the answer for which of those fighting genres is the best is always changing, but it definitely seems to be swinging towards NetherRealms Studios most famous franchise lately.

Mortal Kombat 1 Pre-Order Editions Revealed

Due on September 19th, 2023, the next instalment in the goriest fighting franchise is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC in a variety of different editions. What comes with each edition though? And is it worth the money? Read on and find out.

Mortal Kombat 1 – Standard Edition

Mortal Kombat 1

As expected, the Standard Edition of the game is the cheapest, but it also comes with the least. Coming with the base game, you’ll be able to destroy your rivals in the most bloody of ways, and it also comes with the pre-order bonus as well – detailed below. Surprisingly the last gen copies will be sold at the same price point as those on current generation at $69.99, meaning if you have the choice, you’d be better off taking advantage of the processing power of the current generation consoles, compared to that of the Nintendo Switch or the middle-ground Xbox Series S.

Mortal Kombat 1 – Premium Edition

Mortal Kombat 1

As with the Standard Edition the Premium Edition includes the base game itself, the pre-order bonus and a number of items you otherwise couldn’t get hold of.

  • 1250 Dragon Krystals (the in-game currency, previously used to purchase skins, arenas etc in the game’s shop, the Crypt).
  • Early access starting September 14th – a full five days early access granting you training time to take on those who only opted for the Standard Edition.
  • Early access to the DLC characters upon release.
  • Kombat Pack which includes six new playable characters, five Kameo characters and an exclusive Jean Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage.

Whether this extra content is worth the extra $40 it’ll cost is up to you, but with the Premium Edition currently priced at $109.99, make sure you use that early access to its fullest.

Mortal Kombat 1 – Kollector’s Edition

Mortal Kombat 1

Surprising no-one with a name like that, the Kollector’s Edition is the biggest and priciest of the different editions on offer, but also the hardest to get hold of. Already sold out in most major distributors, if you’re interested in the Kollector’s Edition it’s going to take some hunting around.

As well as all the content the previously mentioned editions include, the Kollector’s Edition includes some physical items as well.

  • 2700 Dragon Krystals.
  • Limited edition Liu Kang in-game variant.
  • Liu Kang sculpture.
  • Exclusive steelbook case.
  • Limited edition COARSE art prints.

The price hasn’t put many people off purchasing the Kollector’s Edition, as already mentioned, it’s sold out nearly everywhere, but the $249.99 price tag is a hefty one to swallow for only the most die-hard of franchise fans.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Pre-Order Bonuses

Mortal Kombat 1

Each of the different editions above include all of the below. Every pre-order grants access to Shang Tsung as a playable character, regardless of platform. If you pre-order the game on either the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S then you’ll be able to access the beta test of the game, although the date of that is still unannounced. Lastly, pre-ordering the game on those two same systems at Gamestop specifically will get you a different, exclusive steelbook case for the game.
