As well as the DLC characters Quan Chi, Ermac, Takeda, Li Mei, Tanya, and Baraka, Ed Boon announced a trio of comic-book inspired superhero characters that follows the franchise’s tradition of having pop culture characters involved in the roster.

Whereas before we’ve had major horror icons like Alien, Jason, The Terminator and so on, recent editions of the fighting game have veered towards comic characters, most recently including The Joker in the roster, amongst others.

Mortal Kombat 1 is looking to revolutionise and reinvent the fighting franchise after the timeline resetting antics of Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath expansion, where Liu Kang merged with Raiden, rewriting the timeline and giving us a blank canvas to work from with Mortal Kombat 1.

NetherRealm Studios are using this to their advantage, completely reworking allegiances, character origins, bringing dead characters to life and erasing others completely. It’s not a small change, and represents a soft reboot to a franchise that only had its last one with Mortal Kombat 9, in 2011.

Leaked by Amazon a few months ago, the contents of the first DLC character pack is not much of a surprise to anyone, but confirmation is still nice. With recent cameo appearances in a crossover with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the character is making waves in the video game world.

However, for those wanting to play as Homelander at launch, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. In a press release from NetherRealm’s parent company Warner Bros. it was announced that Homelander wouldn’t be playable until 2024, so the same can be expected for the rest of the characters, with the release date of the pack clearly some point next year. Presumably early in the year though.

For those unaware, Homelander is the leader of the Seven in the comic and television series The Boys. Set in a world where superheroes are a PR exercise in making the worst of us seem good, the superheroes are the real villains, with the average everyman having to take arms against literal Gods, in this case, Homelander.

The other two characters mentioned were Peacemaker, star of his own tv show thanks to James Gunn, and played by John Cena. Known only be the most die-hard of comic fans, Peacemaker is featuring a steady rise in popularity, with this appearance the latest but definitely not the last in pop culture. Lastly there was Omni-Man, the antagonist of the Amazon Prime show and Robert Kirkman graphic novel Invincible. Like Homelander he is more or less a God compared to the average man, but unlike Homelander, he’s not a lab-baby, but of an Alien race.

What do you make of these additions to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster? Will you be playing as any of the three? Let us know in the comments!
