Mike Flanagan Claims Idris Elba's The Dark Tower Movie "Salted" $113M Stephen King Franchise, Forced Him To Take a 'Different Approach'

In the latter part of 2022, it was announced that a TV Series would take place after Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. The Dark Tower is a popular book series, and when it was announced that a movie adaptation would take place, fans were excited to see the final product. However, when The Dark Tower starring Idris Elba released in theatres, it was considered a disaster because it was bombed with negative reviews and collected only $113.2 million.

Mike Flanagan Explains his Reason for a Different Approach for the Series

Recently, Mike Flanagan appeared as a guest on The Script Apart podcast, and during the episode, he stated the reason that he chose to think of a different approach to Stephen King’s series is that the 2017 “salted the Earth” for future adaptation, which includes his upcoming TV Series. The filmmaker explained that they are thinking of a better approach because “the movie did an enormous damage,” but the different approaches are not quite blowing him away.

[My Dark Tower adaptation] couldn’t be more different [from the movie]. That was the wrong approach to the material, kind of across the board, and it was such the wrong approach that I think it kind of salted the earth for anyone else who wanted to plant something under the Dark Tower banner for who knows how long. But that’s what we’re running into trying to get the show going, is the movie did an enormous amount of damage to the potential [of] getting another iteration up.”

“And they were able to overcome it for an Amazon [Studios] series that took another, different approach again — that is very different than the one I am proposing — and that didn’t get off the ground. So that has also directly impacted — and I’m at Amazon! That’s my studio now for television, and I can understand going to them and saying “Hey, would you like to walk exactly down the same title that you spent all this money on, that you still feel bruised from.” I understand the issues.”

The TV Series by Mike Flanagan would be worth checking out because the filmmaker has made a name for himself in the horror genre because his films had a compelling story, attention to detail, and willingness to take risks. As a result, his works have earned him a massive and loyal fan base in the horror genre.

Details about The Dark Tower TV Series

During the final stretch of 2022, it was stated that Mike Flanagan would be creating the TV Series, inspired by King’s Book Series. Flanagan has planned that his adaptation would be 5 seasons long, and he calls this adaptation his dream project. And he has stated that his first shot would be similar to the first book of the series “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.”
